Re: Portis Out To Prove Redskins Wrong

I just saw on ESPN that Portis is doing or did a work out for the Pats. You know after watching our new RB I realise how slow CP really was.

Re: Portis Out To Prove Redskins Wrong

Vinny and the Redskins gave up Champ Bailey and a 2nd rounder for him and then cut him after a few years. What is there to prove wrong? Helu and Royster are looking good, granted it is pre-season and Clinton hasn't found a home yet. I think he proved himself wrong.

You really shouldn't post any negative comments about the guy other than injuries. He obviously played all out when he was on the field and was one of the Redskins' best players the past 6 years. It's a shame he never had a feared passing game helping him out.

I can't knock CP, he was the only thing running right on our offense other than Cooley for a long time. Gibbs ran the shit out of him, and he still ran for Zorn, and decently for Shanny. THe guy was a trooper, but we did need fresh legs, so it was time to part with him. He will find a home, and if he can get/stay healthy be a productive back. I can see him as a 3rd down back for the Pats.

It seems a good chunk of fans need to undergo their own culture change from worshipping individuals to worshipping the team. Clinton Portis is not going to prove the Redskins wrong for cutting him.

The days of teams having feature RBs for 5+ years are over. You run these guys until their legs fall off and then bring in the next guy. CP held out longer than most backs.

Portis ran hard for the skins. He gave us everything he had left in the tank. Gibbs destroyed him by working him so hard. He went from a quick 1 cut slasher in Denver to a bigger back for us. Watching him pick up blitzes was a pleasure.

However, he had gotten to a point where he typically tackled himself on most plays by tripping over his own feet. He was starting to get slower and less reliable. I hope he finds a home somewhere, he'd be a great 3rd down back for someone.

This.

Cult Brennan, Marko Mitchell, Brandon Banks, etc. I can't begin to tell you how many idiotic quotes I've seen out there talking about how the Redskins would regret cutting these individuals. It's hilarious looking back at all those foolish statements and laughing and having a sigh of relief these guys don't run our team.

I agree with everything you said.

He was (and may still be) as good in pass protection as any RB I've seen. He can also catch the ball and he's plenty tough enough to pick up short yardage. Yes, he could be a fine 3rd down back on the right team - and NE might be the right team for him.

If he were to earn a ring in NE, I'd be happy for him. He deserves it.

Per Boston Globe, Portis showed up incredibly out of shape for his workout with the Pats.

Too bad. If that's true, then I guess it's over for him.

I heard from someone with the Pats' organization who said that Portis was "not in the condition you would expect from a free agent coming in for a workout" but that the Globe characterization was "a bit over the top".

Recall that Portis was one of the guys here who did not regularly participate in team activities in the off-season and who worked out by himself until camp started. And on a couple of occasions here, he showed up at camp needing to work his way into good condition. With a full training camp, he was always ready to answer the bell in September.

It seems as if time and lack of attention to training details and regimens have caught up with Portis. He can still catch on somewhere if a team loses one of its key RBs AND IF Portis goes back to Florida and gets himself into shape.

However, his days as "the lead back" or as a "1200-yard back are over"...

Re: Portis Out To Prove Redskins Wrong

He's the 2nd leading rusher in Redskins history, I have to appreciate him for that.

But he could have been #1 if he just worked. And at the same time that's why we had to move on. Good luck to him.

Re: Portis Out To Prove Redskins Wrong

I can't bash the guy. I loved watching him play. He was the biggest play maker we had for a couple of years. He was a workhorse and his time here paid him well and also wore him out. He put his body and career on the line for us. He played it out well and made a ton of cash.

That being said, his remaining career he will have a much smaller role and hell he may not even catch on with any team. He is the kind of guy that isn't that work out monster and seems from stories that have been told that he is more into partying than workin out.
