All good points, what these two signings do is put very talented players in a highly competitive state, through financial incentives, with CP who really has no financial incentive. It is up to the coaches to get the best out of every player on the team, and if CP views this as a wake up call and participates and outperforms the other two the team wins, if he doesn't bounce back and either of the other two meet their incentives, the team still wins. Excellent for fans of the team, not necessarily for fans(or haters) of a specific player.

I agree. I don't particulary like Portis, but this is straight up telling it like it is. It's all about competition.

Ok, here are the stats, Portis is better in the following categories: Yards per carry, yards per game, double digit TD seasons, over 1,200 yard seasons, 20+ yard carries, 40+ yard carries, 3 times as many receiving yards, and a WAY higher passer rating (lol).

Both have 2 pro-bowls, but CPs last one is more recent.

People are silly. They think of "Fast Willie" and grin, talking about how he should take CP's place when Portis is better in every statistical category that matters. Think about it. Willie's best season was 1,494 yards in 2006. Portis had 1,487 in 2008 with a crappy o-line. He's also got 3 seasons in the 1,500s... so to me there is no comparison. AND HE'S A YEAR YOUNGER THAN WILLIE!?!?!?

I don't know how anyone who has been watching the last two years can have any faith in Portis as a starting rb. That being said, this competition might get him riled up enough to care and produce. Maybe we didn't sign 2 great rbs, but they pretty good with star potential.

He was leading the league in rushing deep into '08.

He is better than people are giving him credit for.

probably means we won't go RB until next year's draft...which is fine...we have other more important needs to address...such as QB.

this move pretty much eliminates drafting a back this year. we only have 5 picks and have to do the most with what we have.

Run first teams usually average well over 30 rush attempts per game so i don't see why these three backs couldn't share carries. of course one of the three would have to take more of a backseat but they would still see the field a fair amount of times.

my point is that we don't HAVE to cut any of these backs and they could all make the team. this three back system can work. this is a win-win situation for the team, either CP wakes up and returns to his old form or he gets out performed and we have a better rusher in the backfield.

One could argue that Johnson has the least wear and tear of the bunch. The point isn't which one will be great by himself, but the possibility of them being great together.

If we can get 1,800 yards combined out from this combo, it was well worth not drafting a big name running back this time around. As far as Parker goes, he's a true change of pace back for the Skins, and I'd take him over Rock or Betts any day of the week.

Basically they have it all at runningback right now. All are experienced.

Portis is the combo back, he can also be the workhorse. Johnson is a good short yardage option and could be the workhorse. Parker seems to be the perfect 3rd down and change of pace speed back. I wouldn't want Parker to be the workhorse but he has done it before.

I feel like we can go into the draft with the runningback position covered from top to bottom.

Agreed.

LJ + Willie > Betts + Rock

Portis is not washed up, he was having a decent year last year until the concussion and what not. He averaged 4.0 YPC last year. LJ showed promise with the Bengals and under Shanahan i believe he can be even more productive. Willie is the only true wild card for me as far as production goes, but he's better than Rock and with LJ and Clinton we don't need him to be a pro bowl runner.

I think the reason people expect this backfield to fail is because their expectations are too high. We don't need them to all be the pro-bowl runners they once were. Their past history is in a sense haunting them, and people would see them not all reaching 1000 yards a failure. People need to lower their expectations and realize that they are a backfield by commitee now, not three superstars.
