Cap Casualties in offseason

A couple weeks ago phillip daniels looked like he would be gone. Now he's having a great season. Do you guys think we'll cut him? What about Lavar? Anyone else off hand?

unless something wonderful happens, Lavar will probably be gone. I suspect if they're going to keep McCune around, they'll move him in the middle and put marshall back on the outside.. I think they just have to find a trade for Lavar to get out of most of his cap penalties, but I'm not 100% on that. We may have to eat a little bit of the money, but he should have a decent interest in the market.

Prime candidates are:

Matt Bowen - save $2 million
Walt Harris - save $2 million
Cory Raymer - save $1 million
Brandon Noble - save $1.5 million (did we cut him already?)
John Hall - save $1.2 million

Daniels definitely stays. I'd look for an extension for Dockery. He's a keeper.

Noble is on IR. (but will probably retire at the end of the year)

I would like to see Hall and Novak compete next year. But I think Hall probably is gone too.

I dont know why you guys think lavar is gone in the offseason... I mean if we were in a dire cap situation like the titans this year i could understand. But with the normal restructuring/cutting of loose ends it looks like we'll be ok in terms of getting under the cap. And in addition, it would cost more to cut/trade lavar than to keep him.

Plus, lavar hasnt been entirely healthy this year. I truly believe that with a full healthy offseason he would be back to his old self next season, and with him marcus washington and lemar marshall...i reallly think we would have one of the best linebacking corps in the league.

Then if the year after someone wants to get rid of him...once he has top market value, and a lesser cap hit for the skins...well that might be a business decision (though i hope he remains a skin for the remainder of his career). But why trade him now??? The timing just doesnt seem favorable at all...huge cap hit+not top trade value cause he hasnt been healthy. I say keep him...but thats just me i guess.

I agree with you that it's a bad time to get rid of him because we'll have to eat a cap hit in the realm of $12 million. And I agree that he doesn't come with top trade value right now. The problem is that he clearly doesn't want to be here. Maybe something will change and he and Gregg Williams can work things out, but right now Williams doesn't seem to like Lavar too much.

I tend to trust Gregg Williams, if he thinks Lavar doesn't follow the script enough, then we're better off without him. Might as well get something for him if Gregg Williams thinks he'll be of little use to the Redskins.

The thing is, Arrington is due a $6 million roster bonus in the offseason. The only way the Skins would pay him that money is if he restructures his deal, which would mean we'd be committing ourselves for another few years in terms of the salary cap. I don't see Gregg Williams making that committment to Lavar.

Lavar is supposed to count $12 million against our cap next year if he's on the team. If we cut him post June 1, he'll count $5 million in 2006 and $7 million in 2007. So that would save us $7 million in 2006, but we'd carry $7 million in dead money in 2007.

If we cut/traded him before June 1, he'll count $12 million in 2006 as dead money. So in that scenario he'd count $12 million whether here or gone.

Cutting/trading him post-June 1 seems most likely. I can't see Gregg Williams making the committment.

Daniels has definitely earned himself a job for next year with his play recently.

As for LaVar, the writing is on the wall. I don't understand how someone can't see his exit from the team coming. I'd be really surprised if he's back with the Redskins next year.

I not a capologist, capmeister, or a caparama, but word is, cap hit is extraordinary with Lavar leaving the team under any circumstances in 2006. If that is true, what is attractive about letting him go?

The cap hit is big, but there's a way to spread the hit over 2006 and 2007 so that it's not terribly burdensome in any one year. It would still be a significant hit each year, but not as bad as the hit we endured for shedding Coles this year.

#2 It's pretty well known that LaVar and this staff's relationship has been a bit "strained" at times. Something tells me this staff thinks they can win without him and his huge paycheck and his money would be better spent elsewhere.

I think LaVar stays because I can't see us being able to handle more dead cap. Coles was a huge hit for us and I don't know if Trotter is still counting but his contract was big but nothing like LaVar's. Plus Brunell won't last for his whole deal so there will be more.

Is is just me, or is LaVar no longer the "face" of the team? Right now, I'd say it's Clinton Portis and then maybe Sean Taylor.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still a huge LaVar fan, but he's become very "high maintenance" with all of his complaining and injuries. He's just no longer Redskins' posterboy.

That said, I hope he comes back with a vengenance during the playoffs and makes the off-season decision a tough one for us!

Brunell won't cost us much. He is our starter next year and will be a veteran backup the following year. The cap hit after that is negligible, IIRC.

These hits clear off the books pretty quick. If you cut a guy before June 1, he's off the books after the upcoming season. If you cut a guy after June 1, he's on the books for the upcoming season and the one after that.

Trotter is off the books as of 2006, and so is Coles. In 2006 (next year's season) we will be eating $1.6 million for Michael Barrow, $1 million for Chad Morton, and $667,000 for Darnerian McCants. Even if we cut Arrington before June 1, we'll still carry less deadcap in 2006 than we did this year.
