Redskins Notes (3/15)

The washington post said it best:

Carter's arrival will shuffle the defensive line. Carter will play right end, which would move Phillip Daniels from right to left end. Daniels ended the season strong, recording seven sacks over the final three regular season games and the playoff win over Tampa Bay. Left end Renaldo Wynn, who is recovering from surgery after breaking his forearm against the Buccaneers, likely will be moved to defensive tackle.

The Redskins have not replaced LaVar Arrington at weak-side linebacker, and Gibbs conceded he feels the Redskins are thin in that area, as well as at defensive back and on the offensive line.

Redskins Notes: Gibbs said the Redskins have agreed to terms with backup defensive lineman Cedric Killings, but did not release contract terms. Killings, 28, appeared in 10 games last season for Washington, recording 13 tackles, nine solo. . . .

Although Sean Taylor is preparing to go on trial on felony assault charges April 10 in Miami, Gibbs said he expected him to attend optional team workouts starting March 27. "I would think so. There will always be concerns," he said. "We've had numerous conversations with [agent Drew Rosenhaus]. It's a process you have to go through and hopefully it will work out for the best." . . .

Killings is a good guy to have back, Wynn to DT as I've said before (he's an upgrade at DT #2 over joe, which means our DT depth is now taken care of, and if we get evans back, or DE depth would be pretty good to. I've heard we're making a strong push to get him signed).

Joe looked pretty good last year.

joe's not bad at all, but wynn should be even better there, and then we've got a good 3 man DT rotation and 3 decent DEs with one great one.

I love Joe Salavea'a. I'm not sure Wynn is an upgrade at DT over him. They're both good run stoppers, and neither rush the passer very well. I'd think they'd be part of a heavy rotation, I highly doubt Wynn would push big Joe out of the lineup altogether.

I agree with Schneed10, I'm not sure if Wynn would be an upgrade over Salave'a.

I do think Wynn helps give us some depth at DT in a rotation, but I would guess Salave'a would still start.

Wynn doesn't have the bulk to play full-time at DT.

Yeah that would be my main concern with Wynn at DT full-time, he's not that big. Salavea'a is bigger, and just strong as a friggin ox, he's so hard to move. He's great for run-defense because he just clogs things up. Wynn is a great run stopper as an end because he matches up size-wise against tackles very well. But guards are bigger, and I think he'd be susceptible to getting moved out by a bigger guard like Philly's Sean Andrews.

But Salavea'a did have those plantar fasciatis problems in his foot, and that is a recurring type of injury. It's nice having Wynn as a 3rd DE/3rd DT because Big Joe's foot could flare up again. And Phillip Daniels has been known to get knicked up in his career. So I take comfort in having the depth.

But I'd think you'd want Salavea'a in at DT on running downs, especially when he's fully healthy.
