NFL in other countries

I heard rumors last year that the NFL was looking at the option of a expansion team in Mexico. That coupled with the pre-season games that are played in other countries.
Does anyone think that we are moving toward a World football leauge that would play at the same level as the NFL and if so does anyone think this is a good idea or not.

Interesting question. I lived in Mexico City for a year and was srprised by the popularity of the NFL downthere. One guy I worked with was a HUGE Steelers fan, although most Mexicans prefer Dallas, Oakland, and San Fran. The 49ers/Cards game last year was sold out.

One of the major TV stations broadcasts Monday Night Football and throws a huge party at the Hard Rock Cafe every Monday where they have games, prizes, costume contests, etc... I watched the Skins get worked by the Packers with a bunch of Mexican friends, but had a good time. (I later went back to teh same restaurant to watch the US beat Mexico in the World Cup, so all was well).

That said, I still don't think there is enough support to produce a sufficient fan base. Not only that, but I doubt many players would want to live there. I had a great time, but I speak Spanish and I wasn't a millionaire. Kidnappings are real in Mexico City, so they would have to spend a bit on bodyguards, etc...

Maybe they will start in Canada, or Djibouti.

too many teams already spreading the talent pool way to thin. i hope like hell it never ever happens. its like all the leagues in the past and the cfl, they arent even good enough to be the $hit on the bottom of their cletes.

i doubt there will ever be a "world league", maybe a north american league with canada and mexico someday in many decades, but i dont think it will ever blossom in europe, africa, asia, etc.

Having NBA and MLB franchises in Canada was a bad idea, what makes having an NFL team in Mexico a good idea?

Given the current economics of Pro Football it would be difficult for a Mexican team to be competirive, How many Mexicans can pay $500 or $1000 for season tickets? How many would want to?

The Canadians have their own league and based on certain claims being made in these pages, they support that league strongly. Any move by the NFL northward would be seen as as an encroachment on Canadian sovreignty. I sense that the Canadians are in a bit of a surly mood towards us right now. (There is trouble in the forest)

in mexico you'd have a population base with close to 9million people. you'd obviously need a big stadium (130k seats) and cheaper tickets, as well as cheaper merch. that said, there probably are a good number of business owners etc that could afford more expensive seats.

It wouldn't be like FedEx Field where you can charge $8 a beer and expect people to pay though.

Maybe, one day, we could all come together and be unified through the love of one sport: Football? I think soccer is a little farther ahead than football in that department.

It is less about how many Mexicans CAN pay, and more about how many Mexicans care enough to pay. There is more than enough money in Mexico City to support one football team.

The thriving upper class and a growing middle class regularly dish out money on sporting and other cultural events. The nicest Mall I've ever seen is in Mexico City, made Tysons II look like a Walmart. Their rich live rich and there are a lot of them. Sadly, there is much more distance between the have and have nots in Mexico than in the US, leaving many is abject poverty.

There is some talk of trying to put an expansion team in New Mexico (I imagine that's a lonnnnng ways away)

Anyhow, the plan would be to have that team take advantage of that geographic area and its demographics and play some games each year in Mexico City.

Im from Southern NM and it is growing at a rapid rate. But as far as a major sports franchise i dont think that the team would make enought money. The El Paso/Juarez (Mexico) and Las Cruces area has a large population when combined but there is also alot of poverty there. I would love to see it happen but i think that for Gov. Richardson is using this to draw national attention to our state and maybe even attract some large scale business to the state, I say good on him.
