Re: The Ultimate Stat Line
It would be interesting to keep his name in the back of my mind and see if he ever produces at higher levels.

He could be an offspring of Chuck Norris.

Re: The Ultimate Stat Line
yeah, but in div-2 (or women's pro football) you see 250-0 wins sometimes. the competition was obviously terrible. if he does that in div-1 in college, then you start tracking him. With his current stats, you figure he'll be on scholarship somewhere.

Re: The Ultimate Stat Line
This is horrible. I'm all for going for records but come on...the team they were facing was obviously not in the same class. What kind of coach keeps a kid in for that long? I mean seriously, don't you have some backup players you need to develop? When it's 40-0 in the fourth quarter it's time to put the backups in. I hate gutless and shameless coaches and hate athletic directors that don't schedule games against teams in their class even more.
Picking a fight with a blind man is not cool and I see a lot of teams doing that not only at the HS level but the college level as well. It's disgusting really.

Here in PA we have a team like that...Manheim Central. My high school team came was pretty close to beating them in my senior year in the District championship to go to states. Their QB was Jeff Smoker. They've won the Disrtict III championship 13 years in a row now...and 15 out of the last 16 years. So far this year they're 5-0, outscoring their opponents 202-62. Berwick is another state powerhouse but have dropped off a little bit recently, but they've always been dominant. Ron Powlus played for them. They've won 3 NATIONAL Championships along with 6 State titles through the 80s and 90s. |

Re: The Ultimate Stat Line
yeah, and i think about manhiem central the same way i do about this thread a few years back, central beat solanco 91-0 in a game they put their starters back in to try and score 100 points. so much for sportsmanship, i guess

My son just started playing pee wee football. I hope he gets 600 yards a game at some point.

Re: The Ultimate Stat Line
Did you guys read that the other teams coach is bitching about this now. He's saying that they should have pulled this kid when the game got out of reach and that they were just running up the score.
Pursuit of Record Brings Sportsmanship Into Question - washingtonpost.com That's a bunch of BS if you ask me. It's football, if they had wanted to stop him they should have stepped it up. It's not like the kid is 6'3'' 250lbs of pure beef. In fact, he doesn't look all that big from his picture. EDIT - It was in the article. The kid's not that big but he's strong as hell. At 5 feet 8 and about 160 pounds, McCoy could squat 500 pounds and bench 350. The coach knew the kid had a chance to break a very impressive national record so he went for it, deal with it! If the record had only been, say, 500yrds the coach would have probably sat him after he broke it, IMO. But it was all the way up at 700+ so they tried to get to it. Plus, I don't know if this kid wants to try to get a college scholarship, but those don't come easily, so you have to get your name out there. The other coach needs to use this as ammo to get his team fired up. When are people going to stop babying them?

Re: The Ultimate Stat Line
I agree, if the guy is 5'8" they have to do all they can because even if he gets 2,000 yards in a game, he won't get a college scholarship because they'll say he's too small to play.
But I was thinking, their kicker seems pretty bad. Maybe they kept this RB in to give their kicker practice. (10 TDs, 64 points.) Some interesting tidbits: 1) This running back's coach is a teacher at the losing school. (See The games coaches play) 2) This game came shortly after they were made to forfeit 2 games for an ineligible player (who it looks like was reinstated now.) (See USATODAY.com - W.Va. prep RB McCoy rushes for 658 yards, 10 touchdowns) So I can understand the "scr*w the league" mentality. Besides, who remembers if the guy who holds the national record did so in a blow-out? |

Yep, the kicker stank, they should've just gone for 2 every time, unless this was a way to get more practice in for him since he obviously needs it. 1) I wonder what was said to him on Monday back at the teachers' lounge! 2) Records are records no matter who the opponent is. We heard the crap arguments about Brunell's record against the Texans. Hey, it's still a record. I have no problem with them going for the record once it looked like he was on pace for it. He should keep trying since he got so close. |

Re: The Ultimate Stat Line
To me, a lot of this comes down to if this kid has a scholarship yet. It's not like he got a ridiculous amount of carries for the yardage, and most of his runs he just broke them for huge gains. Part of the role of a high school coach is to get your players and school on the radar of Universities. This coach did just that.
Im sure getting beat like that hurts, but it's part of the game to lose.
