Tony McGee Reaction to Titans and Colts Preview!

Tony McGee Reaction To Titans Game:

Hey Guys,

Great to be back, after a very tough game this last Sunday.

I’ll start with what are one of the biggest problems defensively, which is unfixable and that is the chemistry the unit had last year, that they don’t have this year. They got rid of some key defensive people and we’ll start with the biggest name. I understand why they got rid of LaVar Arrington, but he was good in the locker room despite rumors, and he’s a much better player than the guy playing the position right now. Ryan Clark was the guy that kept that secondary together. He’s now starting up in Pittsburgh, and while he’s not the flashy guy, he is a very solid safety and was a big, big part of the Skins success last year. Walt Harris had some bad, bad plays last year, but he is also better than the alternatives we have playing the positions right now. Chris Clemons was let go in favor of Jeff Posey, Clemons was younger, and maybe played better as well.

Offensively, they just did not get the job done. They went against a team that gave up 170 yards a game rushing, and did not run the ball. I did not like the game plan that they had going into the game. The offensive line didn’t play great but they played good enough to win. You can’t blame everything on Mark Brunell, and we’ll get into that a little bit in a minute.

On special teams, you can’t say enough about the job Rock Cartwright is doing returning kicks, its very overlooked and he’s doing a great job.

Overall the team right now I just do not think is gel-ing as a team or as a staff.

Now I know all the fingers will be pointed at Brunell, but you can’t point all the fingers at him. There are a lot of players that are not playing well, so to say this is his fault comparing it to the way things were in 2004 is unfair. However if this season starts to spiral out of control, I think Jason Campbell should go in. However, I don’t think this coaching staff will tap Jason Campbell unless the team hits 7 losses. As long as they can still win 10 games, I think they will stick with Mark because he gives them the best chance to win.

In terms of the fans booing; and the effect that it has on players…its not something that they can’t ignore, and it can have an effect. If you play so bad at home that your home stadium is booing, than it has an effect. However, what can they expect right now? They’ve lost 2/3 at home against mediocre to bad football teams. If you want to take it all the way back to preseason, they’ve lost 4/5, so I can justify the fans booing.

Looking at Troy Vincent, if he can catch up soon enough, he can make a slight difference. He has to make up 5 to 6 weeks so he has to be smart and more physical to get to the point in which he needs to be at with the other safeties we have. Overall from where we started, it’s a downgrade and I don’t know how much he has left, but he can make a difference if he can catch up.

Finally, going into Indianapolis, they are a team the Skins can beat. The Skins should be able to run the ball on the Colts. If you look at the Jaguars v Colts game, the Jaguars controlled the game, and the clock because they rushed the ball up and down the field and kept Manning of the field. The Titans did the same thing when they played the Colts. Keeping Manning off the field is key, but you can’t be afraid to take chances when he is on the field, you need to take chances against him. You can’t play back just because he is Peyton Manning.

Tony McGee's NFL career started in 1971 where he was a starting defensive end for the Chicago Bears. In 1974, Tony began a 7 year stint with the New England Patriots and earned the nickname, "Mac the Sack." His unique ability to swarm opposing quarterbacks helped coin the phrase, "designated pass rusher." Tony's career as a Washington Redskin began in 1982, and included a Super Bowl championship. Tony ended his spectacular career in 1985 with 106 career sacks and played in over 200 games -- a feat achieved only by a select group of NFL defensive linemen.

There were two of them...

Nic was out for the year (and he didnt really do anything SPECTACULAR for us)

Chris was just out for a few weeks, and he had a solid season for us last year in his role.

I belive.
