What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?

I was just inspired by the football position thread, but I feel like this topic deserves it's own thread.
So what's the worst sports related injury you've ever had/caused/saw in person?

I was fairly lucky in terms of avoiding injuries even though I played sport throughout most of my childhood/teenage years. I did have a good amount of concussions (like 6-7, maybe, which was probably a few too many). I got them from a couple of different sports like baseball (1), football (~2), and wrestling (~3), plus a fall when I was 3 (cracked my skull on that one).

But, the worst sports injury I had was a badly broken nose when I was in 12th grade. Most people just break the cartiledge but I actually broke tip of the bone at the base of my nose, inbetween my eyes. I caught a knee to the face in wrestling practice, and right away I knew it was broken because I heard a big crunch. I had a bloody nose off and on for about 6 hours, so that was annoying, but driving myself home with a huge bloody rag was pretty funny. The thing that was annoying was that I could actually see the side of my nose out of my left eye when I looked straight ahead, plus I was having trouble breathing, so I had to get surgery. When I woke up from the surgery my face hurt more than when I actually broke it.
What probably sucked the most was that I had to wear a big soft plastic mask for the rest of the season. It was really hard to see and breath out of it and opponents would some times grab at it. The only benifit was that I could cheat and use it was a weapon.

Overall, it sucked, but I'm sure many of you guys have gone through worse.

Much like I was speaking of in the other thread, I LOVE kickoff team. So much that there was this running back going FULL STEAM at me and I'm going full steam at him. He lowered his head and we BOTH got knocked out and I was thought to have a partially separated retina. Nasty stuff.

Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?

But honestly, the worst "injury" I've had came earlier this year when I was playing my usual lunch-time basketball. I jumped up for a rebound and came down feeling like all ligaments, tendons, whatever else is in there crunching.

It was the most pain I think I've ever been in. To this day, there's something up with it. Like when I move the foot in a circle it pops like a cherry.

I once pulled 37 splinters out of the back of my thighs after an important game. That was pretty bad...

Broken collar bone. No biggie really I guess.

Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?

I was playing center and I was locked up with a block when someone rolled up the side of my right knee. I sprained the MCL and had bruised cartilage, and it's given me problems ever since. I never missed a game though, just taped the crap out of it.

Now when I walk it cracks like rice crispies and every once in a while it swells up for no reason.

Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?

Summer basketball practice before my Jr. year:

Intersquad "game", I grabbed a rebound and turned up the court. I had nothing in front of my except the basket...wide open layup coming, right?

Wrong.

Someone (probably, hopefully not intentional) tripped me. I was going full speed. I felt myself actually flip over once in the air and landed HARD on my forehead AND left knee at the same time. There was a flash and then it was like someone was dimming the lights to black for a little bit. Big bump on the head and a mild concussion AND I dislocated my left kneecap. I could move up all around, up and down really far away from my knee. I had previously dislocated my RIGHT kneecap when a bar of weights slipped out of my hands onto my knee while doing curls about 2 years earlier. Also, since it was summer, they had just waxed the court, so I stuck to the court and got courtburn from my waist to my armpit as my jersey came up when I was sliding a little. THAT was probably the most painful part.

The worst part of it...the coach had just stepped out into the hallway to the water fountain and MISSED it. As a point guard, I didn't get a ton of boards down low like that.
I bet that's a WP record for most injuries at the same time.

My left knee is my good knee today. No problems with it...however my RIGHT knee is a mess.

It's funny though I think I got more banged up playing flag football in college. I broke my right ring finger when it got twisted up in someone's jersey and it never healed right so I have a bit of a club finger. I also got knocked the hell out once when I collided head to head with a guy. The only time I've ever been knocked out cold.

Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?

Age 8 - Fractured Tibia (the big bone in your shin). Cast for 12 weeks.

Age 11 - Fractured Thumb (punched my friend in the head, he had a metal plate in his head and I just happened to hit it - sports related cause it's "boxing"). Cast for 3 weeks.

Age 15 - Knee cap grinding against cartilage. Got this one from pitching, plus I was growing like a weed and my bones were outgrowing my muscles. No cast or brace, just three weeks of physical therapy and I was good to go.

Age 18 - Spontaneous Pneumothorax (collapsed lung). This was scary, occurred while I was in the pool for swim practice at college. Trouble breathing and stuff. One week in the hospital for an emergency thoracotomy (removal of part of the lung). Three weeks of rest. Then I was back in the pool. Scariest injury for me by far, but quick recovery time when you consider the surgery.

I was punting once (also played QB) and got "roughed". Tore my right MCL and was done with football for good. Sucked.

Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?

Oh, I also got nailed in the hand with a pitch in little league and broke my left ring finger. I have to wear my wedding ring on my right hand because the knuckle of that finger is huge and the finger doesn't straighten the whole way.

The pinky beside it is a little mangled too but looks good compared to the ring finger.

I also tore the ligaments in my right thumb and had to have the joint fused with 2 screws since it was beyond repairable.

I have 16 screws, a plate (entire forearm from elbow to wrist) and had 7 pins in me between my thumb, both feet and my right forearm, but they're not sports-related.

Sounds just like my baseball finger!

Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?

my knees are all sorts of messed up from sports. I still can't stand or sit in one position for too long without them hurting like all hell. I probably need to get them cleaned up or something, but that can wait.

Is that from sports or the shed?

Couldn't resist.
