IR -- Playoff question.

While I really don't think we have a shot at the playoffs, I was under the impression that once you qualify for the playoffs, you can take players that are healthy (Portis?) off of IR. Anyone have an article or facts to either back this up or disprove it?

Thanks

5. Rob of Orlando, Florida asks:

When it comes to the injured reserve, if a team makes it to the playoffs are they allowed to reactivate the player?

Answer Man: In a word, Rob, no.

Putting a player on injured reserve makes him ineligible to return to action at any point during that season, including the playoffs, at least for your team. If you release a player from injured reserve, he can sign with another team and play again that year.

Thus, if a team thinks it has a chance to get an injured player back in January, it has to make the hard decision of whether or not to put him on injured reserve. Doing so frees up a roster space, which can obviously come in handy, but it erases any chance of the injured player returning. Teams may instead keep that injured player on the 53-man roster and simply make him one of their game-day inactives each week until he is healthy enough to play.

That’s what the Eagles did with Terrell Owens in 2004, even though the leg fracture he suffered in Week 15 was thought to possibly be season-ending. Because Owens’ prognosis held out the possibility that he could return just in time for the Super Bowl, the Eagles kept him on the active roster and he did indeed play in the big game. He had a big game, too, and that’s the last time Owens made any news whatsoever.

If that was the case we probably would have taken Patten off or IR for the playoffs last year. We could have used him too.

I'm also liking them putting Duckett in there for some short yardage stuff, the way he was used in Atlanta. Also as a change of pace, he's been great with a healthy YPC.

Re: IR -- Playoff question.

Think about the NFC East right now - The Eagles are without McNabb and got STOMPED last night. The Giants are imploding, and are on a very slippery slope. The Skins beat Dallas already and we still have to play the Egirls and Cowgirls again. The Skins are hopefully on an upturn with Campbell and now the D getting their shi+ together. IT IS POSSBILE. Considering Joe Gibb’s record in December???? Makes me just giddy thinking about it!!!!

We HAVE to stop Westbrook. If we FINALLY have this run defense shored up, I think our chances against the Eagles are good.

I think we SHOULD be able to beat the Giants. They don't have anyone left to hurt us besides Tiki.

We get to play them both at home, too.

Re: IR -- Playoff question.

That's a stupid rule, one that needs to be addressed by the competition committee. With injuries in this league enough to knock a good team compeletly out of contention, you'd think they'd loosen the roster restrictions.

For as much as the NFL protects quarterbacks with these ridiculous roughing the QB rules, why not allow team to prepare for the inevitability of injuries by making more people available once they're healthy?

Good point. If we can get on a roll with Atlanta this weekend, the only team I really see stopping us is New Orleans.

But this would allow some teams to do some shady stuff before the playoffs.

For example, last year the Colts locked up first place in the AFC by about week 13. So, if the rule was that you could take players off of IR for the playoffs, they could have decided to put Manning, Harrison, Edge, etc. on IR for the last 3 games of the regular season so that they could have checked out new players/back ups in real game situations.

The game in St Louis has the potential to be tough. I know they were just stuck in a huge slide, but they were playing pretty good before that, so I'd think they can still be dangerous.

Yeah, St. Louis will be dangerous, but I'll take them in St. Louis more than any other team on the road. Their home following is pitiful.
