Sammy Baugh - I've always enjoyed your posts and you do have a laid back attitude about everything. I don't think something that just said hurray for the 4th would have started any controversey. I know I celebrated my independance with a lot of booze and things that go boom, just like I'm sure my founding fathers would have done. However I think you must understand one thing, not everyone here is as religious as you. I don't mind a single bit if you're Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Mormon, or any other established religion we have. Personally, I don't believe in these religions, but I understand how they can bring comfort and they definitely set great morals. Anyhow, I'm going a bit of course. I think the problem was when there were so many religious overtones. Especially when talking with people my age, a lot of us have trouble just tossing differences like that into the water. Most college kids want to argue things of the sort, which we've done on here time and time again.
I'm not a GWB fan, I'm not a religious man, and I don't agree with a lot of moves our country may make. One thing I am, is proud to be an American, I only criticize because I try to improve and not let the country degrade. I'm proud of my country, and I feel we all should be. Especially on it's birthday. So please, please, please just let this thread turn into a hurray thread instead of a few guys yelling. I would just like to quickly say that our founding fathers were firebrands. Radical firebrands with crazy ideas. A lot of which we have strayed away from while we evolved as a nation. Also remember that there is growing support to suggest a founding father (Jefferson) was an Atheist. Just interesting little facts. Every great nation falls, I'm just trying to extend our amount of time on top! Please don't bring anything but constructive criticism here. |

My comment wasn't directed towards your initial post SBF, but towards all the posts afterwards that dragged the whole thing down the toilet.

Daseal, thank you for the detailed comments and I respect your opinions.
"(Jefferson) was an Atheist" That is an untruth. Jefferson claimed to be a Christian and follower of Jesus Christ but actually he only believed Jesus for a great profit and not the son of God. It's only been since the 1950's and that Supream Court that there has ever been an attempt to remove God/Religion from the Government/Schools and such. If the founding fathers had intended for there "not" to be God/Religion in schools why did that Congress print the first Bibles in American and have printed in the cover "For use in public schools"? You can have you opinions and beliefs but please do not go back and change American histories and the intents of our Founding Fathers. Now for this comment:"Please don't bring anything but constructive criticism here." I have gone back and read that complete thread over and over and see nothing I've said to be other then that. I joked with the kid and egged him on but it was "I" being attacked. Mattyk72, I said I was sorry. Again my apologies to this forum, it's owners and members and what the heck to the Redskins too. I'll just keep my mouth shut. peace mike <><

SBF - I also didn't say you didn't give constructive criticism, I meant this one. My grandmother read in one of her zillion magazines that Thomas Jefferson could very well have been atheist. She's a Christian person and hates to hear it, but it was a respectable magazine, I'll try to get my hands on it.
Of course he went to church, just like Presidents now go to church. The possession of organized religion gives the illusion that people have morals. Some of the most immoral people I have ever met would just fall back on their "faith" every time they commited some sort of sin. Either way, this isn't the argument I came here to make. Let's keep this thread from heading the way of the other one. |

The whole history of these books [the Gospels] is so defective and doubtful that it seems vain to attempt minute enquiry into it: and such tricks have been played with their text, and with the texts of other books relating to them, that we have a right, from that cause, to entertain much doubt what parts of them are genuine. In the New Testament there is internal evidence that parts of it have proceeded from an extraordinary man; and that other parts are of the fabric of very inferior minds. It is as easy to separate those parts, as to pick out diamonds from dunghills.
Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law. You say you are a Calvinist. I am not. I am of a sect by myself, as far as I know. Among the sayings and discourses imputed to him [Jesus] by his biographers, I find many passages of fine imagination, correct morality, and of the most lovely benevolence; and others again of so much ignorance, so much absurdity, so much untruth, charlatanism, and imposture, as to pronounce it impossible that such contradictions should have proceeded from the same being. All quotes from Jefferson. http://www.nobeliefs.com/jefferson.htm While he says he isn't an atheist, he also seems not to be your stereotypical Christian. "In a mans mind is where he must build his own temple, and that is the true meaning of monumental." -The Last Emperor |

And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with his wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep for ever. Thomas Jefferson, Notes on the State of Virginia, Query 18, 1781 But by the grace of GOD is america the greatest country the world has ever seen, our moral decline, and our thanklessness, for the GOD who has raised us up, will eventually be our downfall, the liberal is a modern day bolshevik. |

I'm sorry if my post on the original thread was off kilter. I certainly didn't mean it to contribute to that negative vibe!
All I intended is what Daseal said here (in clearer terms than mine): "One thing I am, is proud to be an American, I only criticize because I try to improve and not let the country degrade. I'm proud of my country, and I feel we all should be. Especially on it's birthday."
