Going Postal

http://cbs.sportsline.com/cycling
"Lance Armstrong is back in the driver's seat Wednesday in the Tour de France. His U.S. Postal team's victory in the time trial gives him the overall leader's yellow jersey." - CBS SPORTSLINE

Not only is Lance Armstrong back in the saddle again but the dewd is knocking the bottom out of Sherl Crow too. I wonder if she lets him wear the yellow shirt? lol

GO LANCE & AMERICA!

peace

What Armstrong has accomplished, is accomplishing, is nothing short of spectacular

SBF, where would you rank him in terms of all-time greatest athletes?

this is pretty incredible since I usually only remember him taking the lead in the mountains in each of the past five years. I don't remember him starting off this strongly. people joke that all he is doing is riding a bike but I think he has to be considered one of the top 2-3 athletes all time and that would be if it was just a normal guy doing it but he's doing this after surviving cancer.

I'd rank Armstrong in the top 5 of all time... t's just un-freaking-believable what Armstrong has accomplished.

I'd pick him along with Michael Jordan, Jesse Owens, Babe Ruth, and Jim Thorpe.

Or Jim Brown. Or Babe Zaharias. Or Ali. Or Dan Jansen. Or Martina. Or Marc Spitz....

There's plenty of room to debate there!

You guys are so right. The guy is an all time great for dominating his sport for so long relentlessly. And if you add his illness he over came that is even more amazing.

He like the GREATS as tamed his body and pushed it to the it's max and maintained it for not just a long time but many Chapionships. wow.

He's in the top 10 All Time for sure.

Good question and maybe another complete thread question.
peace

I was looking at the Tour de France section on espn.com and came across a section that showed the elevation for each stage of the race...The tour tracker link. On the right hand side there is the stage profile...Well, look at stage 13. If anyone can make up time and take a lead like Lance usually does in these mountains he is definitely worthy of a top 5 greatest athlete status. Lance commented that he didn't want to keep the lead so early in the race which I think is good for him...But he also said a while back that the team he has this year is the best yet so that's why the probably jumped him into the lead early.

Babe Ruth would be a mediocre player in today's league.

Lance is amazing. Six in a row is unprecedented in a sport that is this grueling. And after beating cancer.

I somewhat agree. He was a great baseball player who'd probably do pretty well in what is now a hitters league, but he was not anywhere close to what would be considered a great athlete. I think having a beer belly kinda rules u out of that grouping of athletes, lol.

its hard to say that, because so much has changed... more money, more pressure, more exposure... no idea if he would have been able to get in shape and be a great player today, or if he'd even be playing pro ball...

yeah, I don't know. his drinking was pretty bad. just imagine how much better he and mantle could have been without booze in their lifes or atleast not in the vast quantities they had it.

yeah, ruth had a pretty bad childhood that probably contributed to a lot of his problems, and it'd just be hard to just tranplant all his circumstances into today and even make a wild guess as too what would happen...

the average player today is better, but that's because there's more money and more exposure (which brings more competition), so i'm not even sure a stat to stat comparision is even that useful... hell, his drinking may have bounced him out of the league and left him in a shelter... who knows?

plus players now put a lot more time in the gym than they did back in the day. and in ruths time, leagues were still segregated so he never really played with and against the complete mixture of the best ballplayers.

I hate to rain on the Armstrong parade but I was listening to Mike and Mike in the morning once and they had a cycling expert on. The guy said that Armstrong is not all that he's cracked up to be simply because he basically only rides in the Tour De France.

He doesn't compete in many other major races and when he does he picks races that are similar to the Tour for training purposes. The 'expert' (forget his name) made the analogy to Tiger Woods and if he only played in the Masters every year and stayed away from all the other majors.

He said that Armstrong is very good, but not in the all-time greats of cyclists.

It was an interesting point of view to hear. Especially when he made the Tiger analogy. Don't get me wrong I think he's a great athlete, but from the sounds of it he picks the biggest race of the year and focuses all his energy on just that one race.

Would we all think Tiger is the great golfer he is if he just played in one tournament a year? Probably not.
