Bears interested in Archuleta
Bears | Archuleta an option?
Tue, 13 Feb 2007 07:09:02 -0800 John Mullin, of the Chicago Tribune, reports should the <A href="http://www.kffl.com/team/37/nfl">Washington Redskins decide to part ways with S Adam Archuleta this offseason, the Chicago Bears might express interest in the veteran safety. Last offseason, the Redskins outbid the Bears for the services of Archuleta, who played under Bears head coach Lovie Smith while Smith was still a member of the St. Louis Rams coaching staff. A new rule allows Archuleta to hit the market at the outset of free agency and the Redskins will likely release him in early March. |

Re: Bears interested in Archy
This makes total sense actually.
The Bears would only have to pay Arch's salary which is $595k and $1M the next two years. Compared to what they would have had to pay to get him last offseason, this is peanuts. And unlike the Skins, the Bears fans would probably praise their GM for this move. By waiting one year, they'll have saved the $10M in bonus money. Plus there is almost no risk since they could cut him at anytime with no deadcap penalty. If the NFL trade deadline wasn't so damn early I really think this trade would have happened last year when Mike Brown went down. I'm not sure how much we can expect to get for the guy but I'd be happy with a water bottle at this point. |

Re: Bears interested in Archy
There is no way the Skins take the cap hit for AA by releasing him. If the Bears want to trade though I see something being worked out.

Re: Bears interested in Archy
Even if we trade Archuleta to Chicago, we would still take a cap hit for the prorated amount remaining from his signing bonus. This happened when we traded Coles for Moss two years ago and took a significant cap hit ($9M I believe) that first season following the trade.

Actually, if Archuleta forfeited part of his salary in exchange to be released, i'd be just as happy, because it would free up some cap space at least.

Re: Bears interested in Archy
Didnt the NFL pass a rule recently 'outlawing' that kind of a move? If im not mistaken it was implemented bc. of Lavar paying all that money back to us.

I wonder if they approached AA and said give us back this amount and we will trade you to the bears, I think he would take it

Re: Bears interested in Archy
What are we likely to get in exchange for him? Probably not much because we need to unload him much worse than they need to get him. Nevertheless, something may be better than nothing. Possibly a late draft pick?

I'd be happily surprised if we got a 5th rounder and stunned if we got anything higher.

Re: Bears interested in Archy
I agree with that. It might be the best of many bad options. I'd like to keep him but what the hell do you do with a safety who has no cover skills? You can't blitz him every down. You can't make him a LB. We have to cut our losses.

Re: Bears interested in Archy
If the Bears truely want him, they'd be wise to give us some compensation. If they trade for him, they get him under his current deal with 6 years remaining and are liable for no part of his signing bonus (which we would take the remaining 6/7 of as dead cap). If he sucks there, the dead cap penalty for cutting him would be a whopping 0 for the Bears.
