I need help with a temp agency
I am a currently unemployed college student. My goal is to get a job by the end of this month and a friend suggested a temp agency. Now I have no idea how temp agencies work and how I should go about contacted them. I know it sounds stupid, but I just dont want to end up sounding like an idiot.
Should I call their office first, or should I post a resume online with them(it has both options?). Have any of you guys worked with a temp agency? What is your experience and what should I generally know. I probably wont be dont anything specialized seeing that I am a college student.

Re: I need help with a temp agency
I haven't temped in so long, I'm sure the game has changed some. But here's what I will say, if you can get a face to face with someone, that's always preferable.
The first thing there going to have you do is take a series of tests, so to speak; To guage your clerical, admin, math, english, etc. strengths and weaknesses. Then from there they'll probably "interview" you. The whole trick to pulling off the interview is telling them that 12th sent ya. Everything will be gravy from there. |

It's always more personable in person or over the phone. Putting your resume on the web is a great way for someone looking for specific skill set but since you're just getting started it might be best to take the proactive approach.

Re: I need help with a temp agency
Sorry went to shower, see im a bum I need to change that.
Ok well I hope to work in the DC area(MD and VA, NOVA area would be nice though). Specifically I am still attending college so I do not have a specific degree or anything like that. Previous experience I worked in a commision based electronics store and last summer and some of the previous semester I ran a branch of College Works Painting and managed 5-6 employees.

Re: I need help with a temp agency
I would prefer to work in a firm that has some government or business background because I am an Econ and politics major. But it honestly doesnt matter at this point, I just need work and my alternate is Best Buy which I rather not do.

Re: I need help with a temp agency
why did you wait so long? with all the govt agencies around town, they are always looking for gophers. i say start contacting some of them, willing to do just about any job. you might get lucky, and work in a field you might someday be interested in

Re: I need help with a temp agency
Yeah I know, I know. I started doing this crap late. Then I got really busy with finals and papers. It is all my fault, but it also isnt my crucial year for internships. I am still a rising junior, I have to bag something really good for next year, and I will get started on that as soon as I get back to college.

Re: I need help with a temp agency
See the problem with me is I have pretty much no relative background for these jobs.

Re: I need help with a temp agency
Sometimes relative background doesn't matter. Companies are always looking for youthful talent to mold. Less experience means that they'll be able to train you to do exactly what they want, how they want it...
Check out several temp agencies and talk to them. Tell them what you want, and they'll do their best to accomodiate. Oh, and the bank idea isn't bad. My wife (girlfriend then) worked at a bank for a summer, and when I'd go see her Friday evenings, she definitely had a hottie or 2 working on that shift with her.
