Macs

I just got a new GMac laptop. If anyone here uses a Mac, are they happy with it? Also, how is the virus protection?

Re: Macs

Just a quick question from a computer technician's point of view:

Why did you buy your Mac?

Re: Macs

Macs are overpriced fashion statements.

Personally, I think Linux is the future. It's so disgustingly good and getting better by the minuter. There simply isn't a good reason why you should pay for proprietary OS, well maybe if you into PC gaming.

Buy a decent machine, install Ubuntu and you're good to go.

Re: Macs

Just curious, what makes Linux so good? Is it easy to install?

Well, I got it because some of my friends have them, and I guess I just liked using them better. Plus, I heard that they do not need as much maintenance as PCs. Plus, I got it for $100 off and I got a free IPOD, which was $200, because I bought it.

You can practically do anything you like. It's fast, it doesn't hog memory, no viruses and every software you could ever want is available for free. If you want to experience Linux just download the Ubuntu CD, pop it into your computer and try it's Live CD feature.

I've been using Linux both at home and at work for nearly 5 years and I'm definitely please with it. The only sticky points I ever come across concern MS Word documents that I have to deal with. While Open Office does a good job of opening word documents, these docs look a little funky at times.

Nothing you pay for is for free in this world. With the kind of money you probably put down on the laptop, the least they could do was give you an iPod for "free."

I do think stepping away from the Windows world is a good thing so congrats on that

Re: Macs

I have a few friends that have gone to Mac in the last few years. They love it. Simple, very few problems with Virus control. When it comes time to replacement, I will consider that as well.

Re: Macs

My brother has one and loves it and trys to talk down to me and my PC. I just laugh. His is pretty cool and easy to use and is Plug and Play with just about anything you plug into it.

Slick looking and bright, sharp screen and I could see me getting one to play with if I had expendable cash.

Enjoy
peace

Saden have you messed around any video editing and audio programs? I was wondering how linux compares to PC and Mac on that kind of stuff.

Re: Macs

I hate all this Mac VS Windows VS Linux Stuff.

They all have their good and bad points.
Macs are reliable and very stable. I know some hard core software guys( they actually work for HP ), They love the mac OS.

Macs have alot of substance and style!
You've spent your money on a good machine.

FYI, I've installed a few ubuntu servers and desktops.
I actually dual boot on my laptop.
The one thing that gets me with linux is that I have to tweak every freakin thing. Sometimes I just want the simplicity of windows or a Mac. Ubuntu is close, but still not there.

Re: Macs

I support them both here and software-wise Macs are fine. The problem lies in the fact that when someone DOES go wrong with your Mac, it's nearly impossible to pin it down. Also, when it comes to PCs, sure, I do this for a living BUT I don't think I've had any of mine crash in years.

I have messed with audio editing (audacity) and as far as video all I have done in that area is rip DVDs into AVIs. There is a whole Linux distrbution dedicated to audio and video editing It's based on Ubuntu and it's called Ubuntu Studio.
