Mayor Bloomberg Declares His Independence

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. He continues to deny any presidential aspirations. But I wouldn't be surprised if he enters the fray this fall along with Gore and Gingrich.

Re: Mayor Bloomberg Declares His Independence

Can anyone explain the rationale for a Bloomberg candidacy? What does he offer that's different? He has a big pile of the cash, though, so the press will encourage him because then it will be their billion dollars. There is an element of Mike Lupica Syndrome at work here as well. The Rangers win the Stanley Cup so we will subject an uninterested nation to endless hockey talk (1995 or so) and now New York has a likable mayor so certainly he should be taken seriously as a presidential candidate. I'd be more likely to vote for the mayor of Tipton, Indiana. People say that Rudy was nothing before 9/11. Bloomberg wasn't there for 9/11 so where does that leave him?

Well, it will be interesting to see what party he takes votes away from.

Any viable 3rd option hurts the Republicans more. I'm jut not sure that Bloomberg is viable. 1992 Perot = viable. 2000 Nader + no viable.

I think he'll jump in. But really, three New Yorkers running for President?

I don't see him stealing votes from either Hillary or Obama. That leaves, perhaps, someone like Guilliani, I would think.

Why do you think that? He is from NY which always goes to the Dems. but he may take enough votes from Hillary to make it go Rep. I heard someone talking about this and thats the only point I can remember but he made several which I could see hurting the Dems.

Why? Because I don't think America is ready for a Jewish president? Or a black president...or a Mormon president....even Hilary is on the bubble.

I think Lieberman left a bad taste in people's mouth with the whole Iraq/Iran fiasco and Bloomberg is going to feel all the backlash if he were to run for president.

I wouldn't vote for Bloomberg not because he is Jewish but because he has nothing new to offer that other candidates aren't already offering. He is a "me too" candidate. I wouldn't mind seeing him run though...He'll most certainly spice things up, especially in NY.

I get so tired of this Americia is not ready for a ___________ type president. If the right person either black, women, jewish etc.. ran the American people would vote for them. Yes, some would not but I don't believe its an issue any more. The media likes to feed us that bull but I just don't see it as an issue.

I think that is a naive view point. While racism/sexism/religious intolerance are not near the levels they once were there still is a strong current of latent feelings. I will be totally shocked if Obama were to get the nomination and win. It is a sad statement but I think it is very true. Unless confronted with the latent racism a lot of people seem to think it doesn't exist and let me tell you based on experience I KNOW it exists.

True story: Someone I know has numerous black friends, close black friends. In fact they helped a young black man make his way through his teens with support and money and basically paid his way through college. By all appearances a very accepting and open person. But when their daughter wanted to date a black guy, a honest straightup guy with no problems, it was like armegeddon in the house. The racism was flying all over the place and it came down to this person didn't think there was a black guy alive good enough for his daughter and that most of them would end up getting her pregnant and beating her. Racism still exists it just hides itself so much better now.
