Painting your house!

So I just spent $1150 to have my house painted and I come in tonight after what they told me would take two days, yet they said they finished in one day (lucky me?) yet my paint doesn't match. The paint guy tells me to let it dry and it will, but I keep holding up the swatch paint to the wall and it is so much different. I wanted a beige color and I have yellow! And on vaulted ceilings which I cannot do myself.... They said I don't pay until the job is done and I'm happy.. but it is now almost 6 hours after they left and the color is STILL yellow!!! The "head" guy is coming in the morning too look at it and I want to tell him to re-paint it.. but I don't know if that will go over well, but I have the paint color I wanted right there on the "color pad" and if you hold it up to the wall it isn't the same! Oh, AND they left a mess of paint on my floors and doors that I had to scrub off when I got home! Do any of you guys paint for a living? $1150 is a lot of money for one room with a loft and vaulted ceilings and I feel like the paint should at least match and I want to tell the guy to repaint!!

Colors often look different when they are actually on the wall. This is why you should paint a section first to see how it looks. Tell the guy to do it again. The worst thing he can do is say no, which he probably will. Then you say "If I ever see you in this neighborhood again, I'm calling the police." Then he says, "Blah". Then you say "Blah yourself." Then you can come back and tell us about it.

BTW, I thought your entire house would be painted red.

That is a LOT of money to pay for one room. It should be the color on the chip-no excuses. THAT is what you are paying for. Professional painters should know enough to check, and be prepared to deal with color match related problems. My wife paints.................a lot of things, and changes room colors.................routinely, and never has color match problems.
She may have to come do your place

Re: Painting your house!

Right. Not saying I'm a professional, but I do a lot of painting around the house and for friends and it should be some semblance of the color you picked. Also, it has to do with the sheen that you got in your paint. Did you get satin? Eggshell? Flat? It has to do with light, location, and texture.

$1150 for ONE ROOM???
One days work for that much?
Are you getting it painted with golden handled brushes made of the finest hair from some rare animal?
Damn, I'm gonna move over to america and become a painter/decorator!
I think I could pretty much get every room in my house painted for that!

Re: Painting your house!

Hess, give us an update of what it looks like this morning. Now that it's dry, does it match any better?

If it doesn't match, explain that's not the color you want and that it needs to be repainted. I'd definitely withhold payment from him until it looks the way you wanted it.

Re: Painting your house!

There are a lot of good hints and tips above...let it dry completely (24 hours) and go back and look at it. I painted my soon to be daughter's room on Saturday, and while wet, the paint color looks different. Give it time. If you still aren't happy, make it known.

It's a huge room with 18ft vualted ceilings and sky lights. I had to hire someone to reach all the way up there, or I would have done it myself. What pisses me off is that I woke up this morning and it is STILL YELLOW!!!!! They are going to have to fix it... I can't stand it! AH!

Re: Painting your house!

I used to own my own painting company (with my father), That is way too much money for one room no matter how big it is. I generally charged $200-$300/day per person for a job, just for labor. The painter probably only put one coat on and thats why he was finished quickly, that is why it is also so yellow looking, its not totally covering. Have him put some paint on your color swatch and see if that matches. Dont pay him until you are satisfied.

Exactly. You definitely got taken advantage of... That much for ANY job to do in a single day is absolutely insane. Imagine if they charged by the hour. That would basically be $90/hour or so. Doctors and lawyers hardly charge that much.

Re: Painting your house!

My heart goes out to woman in this situation. My wife will stay home and some repair will come by and totally just make up shit or try to overcharge her. Then I show up and the whole story changes. At this point I don't even bother having her talk to them.
