Chris Samuels is having his best year as a Pro

The Redskins have not had to give him help this year at all. The opposing right end never has been a factor to date.

A left tackle who goes up against elite pass rushers and nullifying their effect on the game is every coaches dream. Samuels never was this dominant before, but here in his 8th NFL season, I think he's got to be the best LT in the game. I don't even think he has a penalty called on him yet this year.

He's been our best player on either side of the ball this year, and we wouldn't be 3-2 without him. He needs to get a little love because he is singlehandedly (not literally...that would be holding) balancing out the offensive line and keeping it from falling apart.

I agree. He's is playing really well. Except for the goal-line stand against the Giants, and a couple plays against the Packers, he has been nearly flawless.

Re: Chris Samuels is having his best year as a Pro

Every year I call him one of the league's most overrated players, but every year I'm reminded of why we need him.

I think that we have to give a lot of credit to Kendall as well. I believe that in past years (and I think Sameuls even admitted this), Samuels had to compensate for the fact that he was playing next to a young lineman in Dockery and had to cover his mistakes as well as handle his own assignments.

With a veteran like Kendall next to him, Samuels doesn't have to worry and can just do his job.

For a change, I completely agree with you, Tripp. It's unfortunate that his level of play this season has been overshadowed by the rest of the line completely falling apart, outside of Kendall, but it is nice to know that Campbell's blind side is covered.

I think I'm in the minority though, because I've always thought of Samuels as a dominant tackle. Even in seasons where he was hindered by injuries, he's been better than 75% of the other tackles in the league.

Kendall has been more than solid. What a deal we got with this guy. I mean, how many times has been blown for holding or jumping off sides? I can't remember many, if any at all.

I've never understood how people underestimate Samuels' importance to this team. Yeah in and year out the guy is just rock freaking solid. He very rarely gets beat, and I don't think he's ever had a bad game start to finish. We would definitely be lost without him and I agree he's having a heck of a year.

I think a lot of it has to do with the nature of his position. He's a soft spoken offensive lineman, and very humble.

He really doesn't get much praise individually, unless the o-line does well as a whole. It's the nature of the beast.

I agree that he's having a hell of a year, and has proven his value and worth day in and day out. Great thread.

Re: Chris Samuels is having his best year as a Pro

I really hate samuels, At the LT position, 2 or 3 bad plays equals a bad game. he isn't physical enough at the point of attack and lacks killer instinct. I think he is having his best year as a pro this year thanks to dockerys departure, Regardless, I still hate him!

A few weeks ago, we ran a running play to the left side and Samuels blocked his guy and basically stopped in the middle of the gap, Betts ran straight into him. Those are the types of plays we see too often from him, He never finishes a play. for a guy his size and with his talent, he needs to be more physical.

I really really hate him, but he is having a probowl caliber year. Hopefully he can keep up the good work and work on his aggression.

All I can say it wow...

And Betts runs into blockers all the time. I think it has more to due with his lack of ability to make a cut, than the blockers themselves.

That is a comment from somebody who clearly doesn't understand the difficulty of playing left tackle against premier pass rushers without TE support. During some of the years that Samuels struggled (particularly under Spurrier), he battled injuries while the Skins were definitely a pass first offense. Aside from Walter Jones, and maybe Orlando Pace, show me a better LT in the NFC over the past 3 years. We are extremely fortunate to have Samuels.

You should be on your knees thanking God for Samuels. He's pretty much the only O-Line starter we have left!

When he gets beat some fans tend to freak out. But the reality is he might get beat once every other game or so. That means out of 60-70 pass plays he is getting beat once or twice with no help. That is simply outstanding. Samuels is w/out question a top NFL LT and he is the one guy on our line that can not be replaced. There is a reason he gets voted to the Pro Bowl. The guys that go against him know his talent level.

You hate him??? WTF is that all about??? Do you really know how tough it is to play LT w/ no help? Do you see JC getting blind sided?? Your comments are just plain silly.

I've actually played a little LT back in the day( HS Level ).

He is a good passblocker and I did say that he IS have a probowl year.

3rd best tackle in the NFC? Sure, But I wouldn't put him in the class of Walter Jones or Pace( when healthy).

What bothers me about samuels is he never finishes off blocks. He never pancakes defenders. He is as talented as any tackle thats ever played the game but he lacks the aggression to be considered one of the best.

A great tackle to me is a player who is a great pass blocker and road grader type run blocker. Samuels is not a great run blocker in my opinion.
But he could if he learned to play mad!
