Re: I need some new car help
my mom's got this car in white, but with twice the miles on it... and its an excellent car... not as big as the newer avalons, but such a nice reliable car:
cars.com: 1997 Toyota Avalon XL and I had one of these and absolutely loved it... I only sold it because someone offered me 12k for it and I paid 6... this is a nice six speed and if its loaded, they have a bose six disc changer, heated seats and steering wheel, etc... extremely comfortable and fun as hell to drive: cars.com: 2000 Nissan Maxima SE

Re: I need some new car help
I just bought a new Charger about 3 months ago and that car has a ton of room for a guy your height and if you get the 6 cyl it will get about 30mpg. Dodge is having some killer sales and leases right now on them.

Seriously, my wife drives a Civic and I'm always surprised at how far back the driver's seat will slide back. I think most car manufacturer's are building cars with the idea that people are bigger now. Go to a large used car lot and tell the sales dude that you want sit in every sedan he's got.

Re: I need some new car help
I have a '97 Acura CL 3.0, had it for over 5 years now, it has nearly 200K miles, and I haven't had a single problem over typical wear and tear with it. I absolutely love the car. It has plenty of pickup when you need it, you can cruise at 80-90MPH fine, its really comfortable, etc. I drive kinda strange, I like to sit far back so my legs are almost completely extended when driving and I can do that at 6'0. I couldn't recommend that car enough. To be honest, I'm looking for a new car soon and I'm not sure if I even want to waste my time driving a different brand than Acura.

Re: I need some new car help
I am going to echo tuna and Daseal. I'd pick an older car from Toyota or Honda before a newer car from an American company. Not to bash the American cars at all. I think they are now building good vehicles but I think with the money you have you'll be in a year range where the American models may be less reliable than they are now. A Honda(Acura) or Toyota(Lexus) would rock for you and be super nice.

Re: I need some new car help
If it's just you driving around (I feel your pain, as I'm 6'3" and rolling about 330 these days), then you can get something smaller and it'll be ok. I'm driving an 01 Civic, and since it's our 2nd car, it's fine.
However, if you constantly chauffeuring people around, I'd suggest a bigger sedan (Ford Taurus, Toyota Avalon, etc) or a SUV. For $5000, expect high miles...just make sure the previous owner(s) have taken care of the car, and you'll be ok. Always CarFax anything you buy used... I had a 95 Ford Taurus for a few years, and it worked out fine. Only problems I had was tranny (had it rebuilt at 70k, went another 65k miles and it was working great) and heater coil.

Re: I need some new car help
use carfax and be sure to take the car to a mechanic you trust if you have one... most will take a glance at a car and be able to tell you if you have any frame damage, if it has been reworked, and if it is mechanically sound...
there are a lot of tricks to make a car seem okay (radiator stop-leak solution... overfill transmission fluid, etc...) only to have it limp down the road and break... so be sure and safeguard yourself in any way you can...
