Will this team mail it for the rest of the season?
Clearly, save the "we are mathematically alive" garbage, the season is over from a playoffs perspective. Just happened to read the following on J La C's blog:
"We have already covered the fact that Joe Gibbs did not know a fundamental football rule. Publicly, his players said they were to blame for not making more plays; privately, many veterans fumed and looked at it as another egregious error by Gibbs in a season full of them. "Come on man, this is the NFL," one veteran said. "What coach don't know the rules?" There will be many players (Campbell, Cooley, Moss, etc.) that will fight their guts out in the remaining games, but it could be that many veteran players are questioning whether their head coach has what it takes? We all know where that leads. |

By that same token, Gibbs and the rest of the coaches can say "C'mon this is the NFL. What players don't know how to catch, how to block, how to tackle?"
JLC is just trying to rile things up.

NO. Say what you will about Joe Gibbs, but his teams DO NOT quit.

the locker room interviews on redskins.com have veterans saying something different than that. Samuels said the team should not have let it come down to that. The team has always been behind gibbs. Regardless of whether anyone thinks they should be or not, they have alway been quick to take the blame for him.

No Matter how much we respect Joe Gibbs for his past success he needs to go. I would be shocked if he was the coach next year. He just does not get it!

How many games have we ahd the lead at half or even the 4th quarter and lost or had to go to OT to win? I know the emotions were running high but as a fan it gets old seeing them letting teams back in the game.

As much as I like his blog and even though I agree that Gibbs' mistake today was really, really bad, JLC strongly dislikes Gibbs. JLC frequently makes fun of Gibbs' "aw shucks" attitude (which I find endearing), says that Gibbs takes us for fools, constantly criticizes the team, and otherwise seems like a small, unhappy little man to me.

Re: Will this team mail it for the rest of the season?
I would like to know if Lindell's FG kick would have been good from 51 yards out as well. It's not like he was kicking an impossible shot before the stupid penalty. It's definitely frustrating for something that simple to affect us but that mistake was not the single reason we lost today. As for "mailing it in", it's rare for professional athletes to just go through the motions even after playof hopes have evaporated. Let's hope some actually do stop giving it the effort their contracts expect so that we can replace them with people that don't regard their level of participation based on the win/loss record. As Coach Herm Edwards famously said, "You play to win the game".

Re: Will this team mail it for the rest of the season?
Will the players pack it in? No. Does that mean we won't lose 4 more in a row? No. The fact is, for one reason or another, we can't put together a full game- therefore we aren't winning games.
Losing 6 of your seven losses one the last drive is heartbreaking, and it takes its toll on players and fans alike. Will some players/fans blame the coaching staff for various misques? Absolutely, but I think most will simply back their leader's play and lace up for next week.(Metaphorically speaking in the fans case). Simply put, its the Same story, different week, it feels bad now, and many off us don't have much positive to say,but come thursday or friday, we'll all be sipping if not drinking the kool-aid

I think you (and many others) are confusing getting beat for quitting. And assuming that we have something like 21 point leads at the half. Losing the Packers game wasn't about quitting, losing the Eagles game wasn't about quitting, losing the Cowboys game wasn't about quitting.

Re: Will this team mail it for the rest of the season?
It seems that all of our remaining opponents are either on an upswing (Minnesota), or are fighting like hell for their playoff chances (Chi, NYG).
And we flat out don't have the talent to match up with Dallas. I'd be astonished if they found a way to win just one of those. |
