The best NFL Team ever?
First, let me apologize if this is a re-thread. On the eve of Super Bowl XLII, many are talking about the New England Patriots and there march to perfection. I am sure that many also have heard or talked about it themselves, but the question is this, would winning the super bowl make New England the best NFL team ever? Better than the Steelers of the 1970's? Better than the 1972 Dolphins? Better than the 49'ers of the 1980's? Just to name a few teams that were or are held by some to be the greatest.
My question to this website is name the top 5 all-time teams and what criteria that was used to determine your opinion on your list of teams. I was asked a question the other day, would the Steelers of the 1970's beat the Patriots of today? My answer was simple, which NFL rules apply, the rules of the 1970' or the rules of today? I think that when people get lost in this debate about what team is better than the other all-time, they tend to forget that the rules have changed and are totally different today then they were 30 years ago when clothes line tackles were still leagle and performed by on a daily basis by Jack Ham and Jack Lambert. Well what is everyone's opinion?

Re: The best NFL Team ever?
i'm not sure, but that offense is probably the best ever...
the raven's SB year defense was the best modern D, but i never saw the 85 bears to compare them to. |

Re: The best NFL Team ever?
the whole "best team ever" arguement is really kinda silly. you can't really say if one team from the 70's would beat one team from 2008, or whatever. what you can say is, whoever wins the superbowl for any particular year is the best team for that year.
some will say i'm wrong because sometimes people say "the better team lost today", i say "whatever, the team that won was the better team".

Re: The best NFL Team ever?
I would say our 91 team should be considered in the top 3. The 83 team that lost to the Raiders is the one that hurts, if we would have beaten the Raiders I would say that was the best team ever. I would consider the Steelers team of the 70's that beat the Cowboys as the best team ever. Sorry 85 bears, 89 niners and so forth.

Re: The best NFL Team ever?
Best Ever is a statement that will always be open to debate, and it's determination difficult to guage simply because of the reasons you mention.
However, I'm going to list the eleven best teams [in my opinion] I've had the privledge to watch play. 1955 - Cleveland Browns 1958 - Baltimore Colts 1962 - Green Bay Packers 1971 - Dallas Cowboys 1972 - Miami Dolphins 1974 - 1978 - 1979 - Pittsburgh Steelers 1985 - Chicago Bears 1989 - 1994 - SanFransisco 49ers 1991 - Washington Redskins 1999 - St Louis Rams 2007 - New England Patriots On a sustained basis the Patriots, 49ers, and Steelers are unmatched. |

I appreciate the complement SFREDSKIN, I've been around the game a longtime, and have seen a lot. When the Redskins hire their next coach it will be number eighteen for me. |

That could be a cool idea. It might be that I could get you a ticket to one of our home games. There are a couple members of our party who work with the Department Of State are are out of town some Sunday's when the Skins are playing at home, they leave their tickets to anyone we chose to welcome. If you PM me at the beginning of the upcoming season I will know more details. |

Re: The best NFL Team ever?
Bottom Line, If New England goes unbeaten by winning tommarow, they're the greatest ever, period.

Re: The best NFL Team ever?
One quick note on the 72 Dolphins. They played from game 5 to the AFC championship with Earl Morrall (the backup QB), Bob Griese finished the perfect season by playing in the superbowl coming back from a broken leg. It's funny that the experts don't mention that. What would NE would of done with Cassell as the backup?

Re: The best NFL Team ever?
the 2000 ravens pale in comparison to the 1985 bears.that chicago team had the best defense for 1 year than anybody i have ever seen.if you go on quality of the atheletes on both sides any of those steeler teams of the 1970s would beat anybody since then.there must be at least15 players from those teams that are in the hall of fame.i'll give this years pats the nod as best ever offenes though, and i put the 1983 skins second to them.they lost 2 regular season games by 2 points, that's impressive.
