Trade down?

I would love to trade down with Atlanta and grab their 3 second round picks, perhaps our #1 and our compensatory #3 may get us close to a deal like that. I would then target 4 players OT Carl Nicks out of nebraska, RB,KR, Chris Johnson out of east carolina, Jordy nelson out of kansas state, and wait and see which CB falls into the early second round.

I think we have to many needs not to try and acquire more picks, we have plenty of speed already at WR, Nelson brings size, great hands, and an ability to get open, he is a move the sticks kind of WR which is what we need right now a big third down type of WR.

Chris Johnson, I love this guy as a KR, he is ridiculous, he also has great hands out of the backfield and could be used more in the passing game with the short quick hitters that the west coast passing game brings, as well as a high quality backup at RB. He has elusive 4.27 speed, If I am the coach a find a way to get this kid the ball.

Carl Nicks, has a ton of upside at right tackle I feel Jansens better days have past him buy, Nicks will only continue to get better, at 6'5 and 330lbs this kid has a body type to add more bulk without losing any agility at the very least he could be moved inside, these 3 picks along with a CB [possibly Flowers or Jenkins] don't solve all our needs but I believe they go a long way towards that, it also leaves us with a solid 3rd pick, perhaps DT Frank Okam out of texas.

Calais Campbell would be a nice pick early in the second, I think he may slide some just don't know if he would make it into the second rd?

We can address the rest of our needs next draft, or free agency.

#1 Check out the Official Mock Draft thread. We're on the same page with players.

#2 Unfortunately, we can't trade a Comp Pick

Re: Trade down?

Everyone I hear seems to say the best value in this draft is in the 2nd round...that said Atlanta would be foolish to give us all 3 #2's for pick #21. I would move into the top of round 2 for even one extra #2 pick.

Re: Trade down?

I can't see the Falcons trading three 2nd rounders either. If we trade, I'd like to trade down with the Jaguars and get their #26 pick and high 3rd rounder. And then trade that Jags pick to the Falcons for two of their second rounders. Then we'd have 3 picks throughout the 2nd round and 3 picks througout the 3rd round.

But let me throw this out there for debate. Would you trade out of the first round and into next year's first round? Would you rather get two 2nds this year of maybe a 1st and a 3rd in 2009?

good question, I'm thinking that 2 2nds this year is a better bet for us if we plan to draft a wr in the 2nd or 3rd round. The sooner the better as they need time to develop. This draft is fairly deep at D line cb too, so that's a good reason to get the picks this year. Not to mention, 2nd rounders cost less.

I'm going w/2 seconds this year.

Re: Trade down?

I was thinking about the trade down myself. However, I was thinking give Atlantaish team our #1 for thier 3rd this year and a #1 next year. I'd be fine moving down.

The last thing we need is another RB. We have Portis, Betts, Rock, and I really like Marcus Mason from the practice squad. He may be a good kick returner, but I like Rock in that role. My biggest issue is El on punts, I hate him there. He dances and typically ends up getting nothing.

I'm all about Oline and Dline this draft. I also think we need to start replacing Jansen. Personally, I feel his career is more or less over already, even if you don't agree with that you have to admit hes getting within 3-4 years of retirement. Lets start bolstering all along the line. Im not opposed to a CB or LB on defense early. I think we gotta go OL, DL, CB, or MAYBE LB all draft.

Thumbs up Re: Trade down?

Assuming Brandon Albert is gone, I'd love to trade our 1st for a high 2nd and 3rd this year, and wind up with guys like Calais, Jordy, and Buening, plus a DB or two in the later rounds. Now is the time to stock up on some young, hungry guys that we can afford to keep for a while.

Re: Trade down?

SS, I'd definitely entertain a possible trade to next year's draft for 3 reasons:
1) I think that after this season Zorn (and the rest of the coaching staff) will have a year under the belt and will be able to address needs better than with an inherited roster. They could really benefit from 2 1st round picks.
2) It gives us some more leverage for the next free agency just in case some big name talent becomes available. If i'm not mistaken ppl are calling for a much wider FA market next year (with expiring contracts and UFA's)
3) There will be more holes in our roster next year. We have some aging veterans that will likely be cut. We also have some players coming off of injuries whose long term status will be determined after this season. We will have a final say on these players and which way the organization wants to go with them.

Overall I believe that stockpiling picks in a given draft might be risky. If you have a more talented class next year or if a given pick from this year's draft doesn't pan out, I would like to have more picks next year to address that. Also, I'm in favor of spreading out the risk especially b/c there is no one guy that we HAVE to have with that #21 pick this year.

They would be. I mean trading 3 second round picks to move up and select one QB. The reason they would move up is to ensure that they would get a guy that they feel is the best fit for their offense. And the reason they would move as high as the Redskins spot is because

1. It would be harder for other teams to jump over them and get a guy like Brian Brohm before them.

2. The Redskins would offer the pick at a discount, say a 2-6, an early 3rd, and maybe a 6th.

This kid [CJ] is nothing like any back we have, and could be an absolute monster on kickoffs, he's more explosive by far than any back we have, but I am not looking to make him an every down back. I think he's the Jessie hester of this draft, with better football skills, I don't think he could match Hesters return skills [but who can] but he's 10 times better than anyone we have, and we can't really on Matthis at least not yet.

Won't work, because there is not enough value in the #21 pick to justify all 3 picks in the second round. There is only enough value there to trade down and get only one or two of those picks.

According to the Draft Value chart, the #21 pick carries a value of 945.
the #35 carries a value of 550, the #38 is 520 and the #49 pick is 410.

Add up the value of the combined second round picks for Atlanta and it comes out to 1480. The #21 overall for the Redskins is valued at 945. No deal, no way.

You could possibly get the #35 and #38 for your #21, because that value of those 2 picks is 930, which is closer to fair value.

But, Atlanta has so many needs I don't see them trading away those 2nd rounders at all.

Re: Trade down?

I think there is a lot of value in the later rounds this year. I saw in a mock draft that Sweed was taken in the 3rd round. I expected him to go early 2nd at worst. SO there is talent to be had.

How would you guys react if we traded our 1st, 2nd and two 7th's for DE Chris Long? I'm not expecting this to happen, but a friend of mine said he heard that rumor from someone. There are always rumors, and I don't beleive it at all, but I thought I'd ask and see what you guys thought. I'm 99.99999% sure that wouldn't happen.

Wouldn't do it. Long alone is not more valuable than say Jackson and Sweed.

REALLY??! This may be the "local talent love affair" that I have talking, but Chris Long looks really promising. I think he would be an asset to our line and I myself would give up those picks.

With those 4 picks the highest you could go would be the #11 spot, and I seriously doubt that Chris Long will be there at 11.

Again according to the NFL Draft Value chart, the #21 is worth 945, your second rounder pick is worth 380, the first 7th rounder is only worth 6.2. The last 7th round pick is #35 in the 7th is has zero value. Besides it is a comp pick and teams cannot trade those. So total value of the 3 eligible picks is 1331.2. To get into the top 5 you would need at LEAST 1,675.

So the highest you could go to trade up in the first with the picks you mentioned is around the #11 spot.
