Cowboys Extend Terrell Owens

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- Terrell Owens has been on his best behavior for quite awhile. The Dallas Cowboys are doing their best to keep it that way.
Both sides agreed Monday to a three-year contract extension worth around $27 million.

Woulda been nice to see him start complaining about not getting an extension. Cowboys fans are getting a little too much good news for my tastes, first Pacman and now this.

As much as I dislike Owens and the Boyz, this extension was well deserved IMO.

Smart move by them, keep him quiet in what would've been a contract year.

Another way of looking at it though, is that he doesn't have the incentive to play for a new deal now.I think TO plays hard & will continue to do so, but he is still a volatile kid & can start to act like one at any moment.

Yeah, we haven't gotten a look at the way this new deal was structured yet.

The big reason he's been such a good boy in Dallas the last two years was because almost all of his 3-year, $25 million deal was non-guaranteed. In other words, he had to be on the field and playing well for the Cowboys to think he was worth it. The cap hits were structured in such a way that if the Cowboys thought he was being a pain in the ass at all, they'd have no problem cutting him.

He had to earn his money, and he likes money. So he earned it.

I wonder how much bonus they gave him with this one. If it's similar in structure to the last deal, I'd figure he'll keep on behaving well.

ESPN - Cowboys give Owens new 4-year, $34 million deal - NFL

This link at espn.com says 13mil guaranteed this year. It doesn't include details about how the contract is structured, but based on the no.s provided it looks pretty front loaded (assuming that the 12.9 signing bonus is just that & not spread over the contract).

If that's the case it's a far cry from his current deal which as you note is basically a series of 1 yr. deals to allow the boys to cut ties in any given year.

A lot of details still to figure out, but overall it's good news for them. I still think that he's only good in good times. Once things get tough for them he'll be the first to let everyone know it's not his fault. If they have another year like last year, TO will be a continuing problem for us, but if their O starts to have some problems he could actually be an asset to us!

Re: Cowboys Extend Terrell Owens

As good as he's played for them, it hasn't translated to dominance on the field. They've split their season series with us the past two years, and haven't won a playoff game.

He's inarguably one the the best five (I'd say two or three) receivers playing today. That doesn't necessarily make him integral to the team, though.

T.O. made no secret that he wanted a deal similar to the deal that Randy Moss signed this off season, and he got what he asked for.

There was a time constraint of sorts, that being Owens was due a 3 million dollar roster bonus on June 3rd. By signing the new deal that bonus went away. He got 12.9 in garaunteed money. His base salary is only 830,000. And actually by signing this deal, Owens SAVED Dallas 3 million dollars in cap space with the way the contract is structured.

That seems a bit too critical to me. I hate TO & believe that he's a tantrum away from sending his team into a downward spiral, but I'd have to disagree that his play hasn't helped them become a dominant team.

Yes, they lost in the playoffs but they happened to lose to the super bowl champs. They had the best record in the nfc & tied the franchise best. TO has been a big part of that & led the nfc in td's the last 2 years I believe.

I hope he reverts to his philly/SF days in Dallas, but looking at it objectively I think Dallas is looking stronger than ever and their playoff loss should make them more determined this year.

Let's hope for a TO renaissance where he can return to his old childish form.

Its a good move by the Boys. They have nothing to lose except any signing money if TO goes bust and they made him happy which will keep him somewhat under control. Its a win win.

I have to give Jerry Jones some credit. He really seems to know how to manage these problem children. TO is all about feeling wanted and important and Dallas makes him feel that way. I was watching some locker room footage of a Cowboys in on NFL Network and they always have TO address the team after a win. Now they have a big bowl of popcorn at his news conference yesterday.

On top of all that TO seems to be getting better with age. 28tds over the last two years.

Yeah. Good move in the here and now. Needless to say though, the deal is heavily backloaded, which makes things rough should the dreaded final uncapped season come calling in 2010.

I don't know enough about the Cowboys' overall salary cap picture to opine on the effects of backloading Owens' deal so heavily. I do know that they have handed out several huge contracts recently (Owens, Romo, Barber, Newman).

I'll try to look into their cap situation. I want to see if they appear to be developing any final-uncapped-season contingencies.

Yes! I was thinking the same thing, & LL has to be mad about that game in dallas. If he can have the same impact on TO that ST did, LL'd be earning some of his $ just by being there.

Yes indeed. T.O. will discover that there's no free reign over the middle just because #21 is no longer with us. Not only will Landry lay some wood on him, but T.O. will continue to have the drops against us just knowing that we have an enforcer back there.

I seem to remember Owens "dropping" 8 receptions for 173 yards and 4 TD's in the one game against Washington last November.
