Re: Wait to Buy! HDTVs About To Get Even Cheaper
Nice! I almost bought a TV this past weekend but instead I got sucked into the cell phone area at Best Buy and went with a new phone/plan instead.

That's not a price cut, that's still highway robbery. I got the Panasonic TH-50PZ850U for $2379.30 (w/free shipping) through Panasonic's employee discount program about 6 weeks ago. They're selling it for $2,243.34 right now and the lower models are even more reasonably priced. If you're in the market for a new TV and you have an employee discount program I would check to see if Pansonic is a participating merchant. You'll definitly save a boatload...plus, you can never go wrong with Panasonic :cool-smil
BTW, the PZ850U is a fantastic TV, well worth the money. Also, it's a Linux powered TV

And that's why I've been holding out... my friends can't believe I still have an old set, but I told them I'm waiting for the network switch to digital.

Re: Wait to Buy! HDTVs About To Get Even Cheaper
I need to buy a tv for the upcoming year. I have 3 roommates and we will probably chip in 250-300 each. So i need a decent HDTV for about $1100

I bought my 37" Panasonic plasma right before the 2006 season for about $1800, you can now get a 50" for that price. It might be time to upgrade soon and move the 37" to my game room!

So what are you going to do when you're no longer roommates? Draw straws?

He goes to Maryland...they play Duke in basketball at least twice. That TV won't last the year

Re: Wait to Buy! HDTVs About To Get Even Cheaper
That reminds me of what I like to call "The Legend of my Grandfather vs. The TV."
There is a tale that my dad and his 12 siblings like to tell regarding my late grandfather and his passion for the Redskins. One Sunday he was watching his beloved team on the huge family's only TV while eating cheese and crackers. He was sitting in his armchair cutting slices of cheddar with a steak knife when the Skin's QB, probably Billy Kilmer or Sunny, threw an interception. Apparently my grandfather was so disgusted and consumed with a cheese-fueled rage that he hurled the cutlery at the television with such force that it stuck into the top corner of the screen like a dart. Since the family was so huge and the TV still worked (albeit it a hole in corner surrounded by spider-web like cracks) they stuck with the set for a few more years. Now, my family is of Irish decent (hence the 13 kids) and therefore there is usually a ton of embellishment whenever any of them tells a story, but they have been remarkably faithful when telling this particular tale. I guess I hope that it's true because it makes my mid-game outbursts seem like nothing. Anyways, BSB, you and your friends should rent a TV for the year.

We did think about renting it for a minute. But we are planning on living together for 2 years. I figured two years of rent would be a lot and the price of the tv would fall a lot so one of us could just win it at the end. But you're right. Stuff might happen and we might not live together for 2 years. Also we wouldn't pay for it during the 13 week summer and maybe get a better tv in year 2. Does anyone know a general price/month it would be to rent a tv and a good place? I'm checking rent-a-center. Last edited by BigSKINBauer; 07-16-2008 at 05:51 PM. |

We figured that by the time the 2 years was up none of us would want to buy the used set when the prices on brand new TVs were taking a nose dive. Plus, we also knew that there was the risk that something would happen to it (especially since we liked to play hallway tennis and have in-home run derbies).
