Your Art Monk and Darrell Green memories

With Monk and Green getting inducted this weekend I thought we could share some of our favorite plays/memories of these guys.

Some that stand out for me:

-Green's punt return in the playoffs against the Bears. Such a huge play in that game and an amazing individual effort by DG.

-The next week in the NFC Championship against the Vikings where DG broke up the play at the goal line to win the game. To this day I'm not sure if he actually tipped the ball or if it simply deflected off of Darrin Nelson's hands, but either way a very memorable play.

-DG running down Dorsett, or Dickerson, or just about anybody from behind. Whenever an opponent would break free into the open field, my first thought was always "Green will catch him".

-Monk dominating that early drive in the Super Bowl against the Bills, only to have a TD taken away by instant replay. (The right call, his toe was on the line)

-Monk setting the all-time receptions record on MNF against the Broncos and getting mobbed by the team.

-In general, anytime there was a critical 3rd down situation, it always seemed like Monk was there to make the tough catch in traffic.

None of us will forget the punt return vs the bears ,,,, was that awesome ! I actually remember the first time DG touched the ball as a skin , he returned a punt 70 yds for a td vs Atlanta . I was lucky to be at RFK when DG returned an INT. for a td vs Detroit for the win . Monk , the ultimate athlete / Redskin . I was with a few Cowboy fans < 91 > , when Monk caught a bomb for a td and we went on the beat them in dallass Too bad replay took that td from Monk vz the Bills in the Super Bowl . We are going to see two class act young men inducted into the Hall of Fame ,,, here is to the class of '08 !

I was listening to some talk show today interviewing Monk and they were talking about Art playing special teams and was the guy that would go down and break up the first line of blockers. They also said that he even played some D but thats about all I heard on playing D.

D. Green - definitely the punt return v. the Bears, and also that last play v. the vikes when he hit d. nelson. That whole playoffs & super bowl he was at mvp level.

For Monk, there's one that stands out to me. In 89 my sister lived in DC & got us 2 great seats in the first few rows right near the goal line. M. Rypien had maybe his best game ever, 401 yds. & each of the posse had 100+ & a td. I remember seeing Monk get behind a cb (I think it was woolford) in the end zone. My view was so good, I felt like I was on the sideline. The whole stadium started to stand as soon as Ryp released the ball cause they knew where it was going - Monk for a td!

He always killed the bears.

I also remember vividly the monday night game in 92 when the Skins trounced denver & they threw to MOnk consecutive times to get him the all-time receptions record.

the first redskins game i saw at rfk in 1987 against the lions,darrell green intercepted 3 passes,and the sins won.the last one i saw in november of 1991,it was cold,snowy,rainy,and just awful conditions,but monk,sanders,and clark put on a clinic at the wr popsition that day.rypien passed for 450 yards,and 6 tds.some guy named brett favre played the 4th quarter for atlanta.the skins won 56-17.

Another I love of DG was in the playoffs the year after we won SB XXVI, against the 49ers, first SF offensive play is a quick screen to Jerry Rice (can't stand him), DG comes up, wraps him up, picks him off the ground and bodyslams him. The refs call "unecessary roughness", the rest of the day went the same and the Skins lost (clearly a ridiculous call, they were playing in SF and God forbid someone manhandle the "Greatest Receiver of All Time" :vomit. The NFL clearly was looking for a Dallas and SF NFC championship as those two teams led the NFL in scoring and BS media hype.

No, no, no!

That was a perfectly good TD. The replay official, Madden and just about everybody else got it wrong!

Darrell Green catching Tony Dorsett from behind and also Jerry Rice. Art Monk just making big play after big play and acting with class like no other.

Sleeper...1986 divisional playoffs against the bears...Jay Schroeder just tossing it up and Monk and Clark were running fly patterns cuz of the blitz and how monk ended up w/ the touchdown.

Also, the same game, where he gave Mike Richardson his trademark double move and had an easy TD.

Arguably one of the best post-season games in his career.

How about Dec. 11, 1983 when the 12-2 Redskins boarded the bus to Dallas wearing combat gear to face the 12-2 Cowboys at Texas Stadium? With the Redskins holding on to a 14-10 lead early in the 3rd quarter, Darrell Green picked off a deflected pass and on the next play Theismann hits Art Monk for a 40+ yard touchdown. And the Redskins never looked back

Here's a lesser known Art Monk play that has always stuck out for me...

Back in 1991, the undefeated Redskins were trailing the G-men 13-0 at Giants Stadium for most of the game. Remember, this was at a time when New York dominated the Redskins; New York won six in a row and something about the Giants just made the Skins crumble.

Finally, with two Gary Clark touchdowns, we take the lead 14-13. Now, this particular play either came on the drive that led to the field goal, extending the points to the final score of 17-13, or it came to secure the lead and the game. It was the fourth quarter, and the Redskins were facing a long 3rd & 17. No draw plays here -- and by this point the Giants had draped themselves all over Gary Clark.

I believe it was a QB roll-out, and Rypien fired a dart to the left side to Art Monk on a curl pattern, who as usual on third down came through, caught the pass, and kept the clock running. That pass helped close out a tough, hard fought game which enabled Washington to get its first win at Giants Stadium in years, and continue the unbeaten streak.

So this play I think, is indicative of Art's career -- not necessarily flashy, but always money at a critical point in the game when his team needed it most.

My favorite DG memory is that he carried a tootsie roll in his sock to make him run faster. I tried doing the same thing as a kid, but I just ended up eating the tootsie roll.
