Quick Question about Zorn's Offense
Does he have a shotgun formation?
I have not noticed anything thus far in the preseason, and it's my opinion that the shotgun is favorable in certain situations. I know that the WCO uses more short quick step drops by the quarterback, but some coaches sometimes resort to the shotgun formations. This question might be a little premature considering we haven't dove into the system's depth just yet, but I'm curious.

Re: Quick Question about Zorn's Offense
Well, he used it (albeit somewhat reluctantly) at times in Seattle

Re: Quick Question about Zorn's Offense
When Gibbs was reluctant to use the shotgun (until 2005) for the same reasons as Zorn, everyone said it was outmoded thinking.
The press here in town is puffing this guy because he gives good press conference. Unfortunately that has nothing to do with winning football games. The most common error of journalists is to conflate geniality with broader human qualities and or abilities. I'm somewhat glib with the gift of gab and I'll bet I could sit behind a microphone and make LaCanfora's job as easy as fishing, but it wouldn't make me a good person or football coach. (But I would be a lot better than any of you fuckers) This is not to say that Zorn won't be successful, it's only to say that the fact that many writers seem to have a man crush on the coach is nothing to judge by.

Re: Quick Question about Zorn's Offense
There are still a few teams that don't use it and I don't think it's a big deal. I didn't with Gibbs either.

Re: Quick Question about Zorn's Offense
Maybe he will unleash it in preseason or later in the year.

Re: Quick Question about Zorn's Offense
For what it's worth, on Madden (the version I'm playing), I've been using Seattle's offense for the Skins and there is no shotgun. There are 4WR sets though.
I have no idea if the playbooks are accurate though. We're not seeing Zorn's full playbook yet though, so he could incorporate one. Did he use it as a player? That could determine his comfort level with it.

Re: Quick Question about Zorn's Offense
The playbooks are accurate in that those are real NFL plays in there. But if you opened up a real team playbook it's not going to be the same as what's in Madden obviously. I really hope people don't think these are the same playbooks that teams use.

Re: Quick Question about Zorn's Offense
I'm guessing that Zorn wants JC to work on staying shorter in the pocket so he has him under center to practice this.

Re: Quick Question about Zorn's Offense
Seattle's offense is pretty successful without it, but it's clearly in our playbook if Collins and Colt are using it. I agree that it's most likely for coaching reasons that Zorn is not having JC use it at present. Get good at the dropback and timing of the regular offense first. JC was pretty good in shotgun, if I remember right.

Re: Quick Question about Zorn's Offense
I think the shotgun is a necessary element in todays game. that extra second is crucial some times. I think zonr will implement it against high pressure defenses

Re: Quick Question about Zorn's Offense
I've got a question too regarding protecting the QB
Why no blocking TE's on our squad this year? This could be a problem based on all the blocking help Jansen/Heyer will likely need again on the edge. Gibbs knew that....so did Buges...heck, sometimes they put in Sellers too just for additional protection. Against the Panthers, there were no adjustments to increase pass protection. Maybe they are trying to see how the OLine performs one on one, but that doesn't make sense with the starters...they know what they've got there. Is Zorn not familiar with how to bolster an Oline by adding another body?

Re: Quick Question about Zorn's Offense
and I completely agree that Campbell has not been in shotgun nearly enough...
He did well in it last year when they finally allowed it. Regardless of what anyone says, his release is still slower than average and the extra half second or so makes a huge difference in his performance. I'd be curious of what Campbells stats were last year in the shotgun vs not. And keep in mind, sometimes he was in the gun because it was 3rd and 15.
