Chris Mortensen:best defensive rookie in the NFL
harry(DC): Have you seen sean taylor? he's a monster! the redskins were definitely the wiser to choose him instead of winslow. his attitude wouldn't fit well with a gibbs team. which rookies do you think will have the most impact on defense?
Chris Mortensen: Sean Taylor is hands-down the best defensive rookie in the NFL and he may prove to be one of the best players, regardless of position. His personality is puzzling but we have to judge him on his field play for now.

It is soooo nice to finally be right about a 1st round draft pick and watch everyone else eat their words about how we should have taken Kellen Winslow.

I dont think I've been as excited about a rookie being this good in a long time. I remember the excitment when we drafted LA and Samuels, but I dont remember them playing with such a "nasty" streak like Taylor has right out of the gate.

KWII was pissed off about going to the loser browns more than anything i think... washington was a team with a high pick that almost has a lock on a winning season, plus washington DC has a lot more local endorsement money floating around.
Either way, he's an a$$ and taylors a monster... how's this for a comparision: Sean Taylor - 3 ints, 3 passes defended, 2 FF, 1 recovery, 1 TD, 8-2 tackles/assists Kellen Winslow - 2 catches, 35 yards, -15 penalty yards hmm... |

if taylor doesnt improve as a rookie hes still the biggest playmaker we have on defense, but hes only going ot get better.
Theres one big thing that is going to change about him that will make him even better, HES GOING TO PLAY THE ENTIRE GAME!!! Just imagine if he had been playing for more than a qtr against those backups, he would have eaten them alive.

I think Taylor is a gifted player, but before proclaiming him defensive rookie of the year I wanna see him in regular season. I think he'll do very well, very very very well. I just think we're getting a bit ahead of ourselves.
In Winslow's defense as far as stats, how many balls have been thrown his way? 2-3? |

the only thing that scares me about tayler is if he has a huge year, which he should,he's probably going to want to renegotiate his contract which could cause some friction between him, gibbs and snyder.that could lead to a holdout next season. its already been reported that he's not happy with the current contract.

It is pretty obvious that Taylor is going to be a big time playmaker. I hope that Gibbs can earn his trust and respect or next season we will be hard pressed to get the guy into camp before giving him some ridiculous new contract. He knows what to do on the field, but seems totally paranoid about the rest.

One note on Taylor... check out these numbers...
In 12 games at UM last year... 55 tackles, 10 INTs, 13 PassDef In 4 preseason games this year (which actually equates to only 2 full games)... 10 tackles, 3 INTs, 3 PassDef That means that in the passed 16 games (really only 14)... 65 tackles, 13 INTs, 16 PassDef Overall, can anyone remember anyone intercepting 13 passes in 14 games on any level?? I too am wary of overhype... it only leads to disappointment and frustration... so hey, if he only gets 4 picks this year, I'm OK with that... my point is ... DAMN he has been absolutely amazing in his passed 16 (14) games!!! What a BEAST!

Okay guys, reality check time. No matter how good he has looked so far, THE SEASON HASN'T STARTED. While I generally agree that Taylor looks like he will live up to his billing, let's wait until we see him in a game that counts.
Don't get me wrong, I think the evidence so far is that he will be very good. BUT, so far, he is facing vanilla offenses and being allowed to play on instinct; he hasn't really faced complex offenses designed to confuse HIM. I expect that he will be picked on early and will make some costly coverage errors, just like any rookie. With that said, I think he is going to be a difference maker in time. The only question is how long before it happens. |
