Uh-oh, where was Rock?
Could that mean we've seen the end of Rock Cartwright? He didn't have any carries, and I don't think he even had a single play on offense. With the hard running of Sultan McCullough, and Ladell Betts solidifying his position as the #2, I'd say Rock will be the surprise cut on Sunday afternoon. He did put the ball on the ground once, against Denver, and overall I just don't know if he fits in with Gibbs' system as well as the other RBs do. It was a tight battle, but in the end, it was either him or Betts, and McCullough seems to have a lot of upside. Rock is the classic odd-man out if you ask me.
While John Simon has been completely non-existant for the past two games now, one would think he has shown enough to be on the practice squad at the very least. Ditto for Gari Scott -- but that's assuming that both are eligible for the practice squad. I have no idea if they are. Other players who may have bought their plane tickets: Garnell Wilds -- he stood out on a couple of special teams plays earlier in preseason, but there were a few bonehead plays and penalties tonight from him. Also Rashad Bauman -- he hasn't seemed to be much of a part of the preseason plans from the coaching staff. Even Ade Jimoh has seen more action. To me, Bauman is right on the bubble -- he could still make the roster, but it won't shock me if his name is on the cut list too. |

rocks not going on the practice squad. for a player to be put on PS, they have to be waived and clear waivers(no teams pick him up). i think he makes the team, but if he is cut, a team will definately pick him up. possibly the cowboys...

I think that is going to be a key consideration Sultan may have the yards last night but Rocks has shown a lot in the heart stakes and Gibbs is always looking for his real Redskins...
...Plus i don't think any decision is going to be made soley based on last night practice has been very fierce and I rank Sultans chances of making though waivers to the PS much greater than the Rock... |

te kol and bauman stay, rock has the best chance... to be on the PS you can only have up to 1 year on an active nfl roster, and you can't be on the game for more than 8 games... rock is way way way past, and i think simon and mcollough probably are too... thats 9 weeks on the team, not playing in 9 games.

To the best of my knowledge, McCullough is the only runningback on the roster who has practice squad eligibility remaining. I've been a big Sultan supporter since he came here, and I'd love to see him continue to develop as a runner in this system. I saw some good things from him in last night's game, but it's clear he's still adapting to the speed of NFL defenders, and he needs to learn to be more aggressive turning upfield on wide runs. He seems to be doing well as a gunner-blocker on the punt return unit, though. I hope the coaches have seen enough good things from him to keep him around.
Personally, I'd like to see Betts, McCullough and Morton as the backups. But since McCullough has practice squad eligibility, and both Simon and Cartwright have performed well on special teams, I can see one of them taking that spot on the active roster. For me, it's a toss-up between the two. I think Simon's a superior receiver, and seems more versatile. It's common for Cartwright to be called a good short-yardage runner, because of his "bowling ball" build, but I've seen some tough running from Simon, as well. I'd take Simon over Cartwright, but that's just me. My only concern here is that other teams have seen enough of McCullough during the past two preseasons to have an interest in him if he is released. Which brings me to the following question: have the coaches been feeding him the ball so much because they want him to earn a spot on this roster, or are they simply giving him an opportunity to latch on somewhere else? I certainly hope it's the former. |
