Wow, How accurate is this?

http://nflplayers.com/news/news_release.asp?id=2679

WASHINGTON (5-11)

OPTIMISTIC: Coach Joe Gibbs returns after a decade of mediocrity. Gibbs hired many of his old assistants, implemented his old work ethic and acquired some big-name talent, including QB Mark Brunell, RB Clinton Portis and CB Shawn Springs. Assistant coach Gregg Williams is promising to create mayhem with his defense.

PESSIMISTIC: Twelve years is long time to be away, and Gibbs' demanding style could wear thin with today's younger players if team starts slowly. Overhauled offensive and defensive systems will take a while to master. DL is a concern.

ON THE RISE: No. 5 overall pick Sean Taylor has looked impressive at free safety. Free agent signing Portis ($50.5 million contract) needs to prove he's real deal _ and not just an ordinary running back made to look good by Denver's offensive line. OLB LaVar Arrington finally will be turned loose as pass rusher.

ON THE DECLINE: At 33, Brunell can only have so much left, but will start. OTs Chris Samuels and Jon Jansen were once cornerstones of franchise, but Samuels was disappointing last year and Jansen is out for season with Achilles' tendon injury.

EXPECT: Gibbs' mere presence should account for at least two or three wins. But the same was said - inaccurately - of departed coaches Marty Schottenheimer and Steve Spurrier. Redskins should able to flirt with .500 again.

How true is this?

Well I know I'm looking at the season through Redskins tinted glasses but I think they can flirt with more than .500. I think the talent alone is there for .500 and Gibbs legitimately can account for two or three more wins. Gibbs isn't a potentially great NFL coach-like Spurrier-he is a great NFL coach. If Parcells demanding style didn't wear thin his first year with the Cowboys I don't see how Gibbs will

As for Samuels and Jansen. Samuels has looked sharp in the offseason. If he can just avoid those pesky injuries he can have a nice rebound to his career and legitimately make the Pro Bowl. Jansen suffered a major blow, but does that mean he's on the decline? Maybe I misunderstood what I read, were they saying Brunell is on the decline and won't be helped by Jansen and Samuels. Or that all three are on the decline?

Dealing with today's player's a prob? I wonder how Parcell's has managed? And he's much further over the top than Gibb's.

I don't see us missing the playoff's, 10-6, but if we stay healthy I believe we have the talent to do a little better than that.

We were a 8-8 team last year with a 5-11 coach. We have even more talent with a great coach. I will honestly be heartbroken if we miss the playoffs, I'm that optomistic about this season. Flirting with .500 would be a major dissapointemnt.

I too will be dissapointed if the Skins don't make the playoffs. The talent level has been improved on the field, and in the coaching staff. I'm very optimistic. WE NEED THE PLAYOFFS.

.500 is a bottom line mark it seems.

There are just too many unknowns at this point, Gibbs and co. haven't given the so called experts much to chew on this preseason. If they played the whole preseason the way they did the first qtr of the ATL game I'd be willing to bet we'd see more predictions in the 10-6 and 11-5 range.

I also think we as fans need to be careful with our expectations this year. We have a new staff and a lot of turnover on the roster. There is going to be an adjustment period, how long that will be is yet to be seen.

There are different kinds of .500. If the team shows improvement down the stretch and looks like they are building towards something for next year, I can live with 8-8. If they stumble to that record and underachieve, that's a different story.

I agree Mattyk72, it's all in the presentation. Don't get me wrong, I think they should win at least 9 but if they are eight and eight and gaining momentum, it would still be better than the last few years. By that I mean, if they rattle off a few straight wins at the END of the season....
We do have the talent to do a lot better than that though and should press for the division title and the playoffs.

I think it's a flawed equation. We are starting from scratch with a new HC and a lot of roster change. Nobody saw the Cowboys improvement last season, they far exceeded what was expected.

to me 8-8 would suck,i'm tired of 8-8 or lower.the talent is there,it's been there for a while.they need a head coach with discipline and they got it ,not only in joe gibbs but in the whole staff.i'll continue to pull for the skins nomatter what the record but i'm expecting at least 10 wins

thats one thing someone in the Skins locker room has to say before every game. "its not the coaches this time, its not the system. no excuses this year. all eyes are on US". cuz they are.

Skins will go 10-6 and make the playoffs as a wild card. The schedule sets up nicely for them.

This is a rare moment in WP.net history folks!

SC doesn't dish out much optimism, so sit back and enjoy this one! :cool-smil

I'm right there with ya, 10-6 and a wildcard is what I'm counting on.

People saying they can't live w/ 8-8 could be the bandwagoners!?!?

I'm just happy to be able to trust our head coach. You haven't heard anything about Danny Boy this season. Gibbs is in control and I think most of us old diehards are quite content with that fact alone. Whatever they finish the season w/ we will all love our Redskins. With Gibbs as the coach you will see a team even in todays NFL. We won't finish 5-11 and I'll guarantee ya that. Nor will any Sunday outing be a disgrace and a laughable 'fuggit' kinda attitude Spurrier brought and tolerated here. Anyone remember the Tampa game last year? I was at the game and it was the first time I've EVER stopped watching a Redskins game. We gave up and didn't care. It was sad. Went into the Club Lounge and watced the Cowboys.
Times have changed.
Gibbs is back. That in itself is clearly darn close to a miracle.
I hope the Redskins make the playoffs as I have season tickets, however I know win or lose this season we will not look like fools, but warriors.
Hail to the Redskins!
