If You Ran the Redskins...

What steps would you take between now and opening day 2009 to improve this team?

Here's what I would want to see happen

1. Don't Quit on Zorn

I've talked about this in greater detail in another thread, but I think unless he goes totally Norv on us these next three weeks then it's in the best interest of the team to keep him

2. Give the Chief New Indians

If we are going to commit to Zorn as the head coach, even if only for one more year, then we need to entrust him with the responsibility of deciding what staff he wants surrounding him. And I'm going to guess it's going to include maybe 40% of the current staff

3. Trust the Youth

Thank you Kendall, Griffin, Thrash, and Washington but they need to take a back seat now-if not leave the team entirely-for some of the younger guys. These younger guys are going to make mistakes but at this point there is no room for improvement with the four aforementioned guys (when they are even healthy) and if we're seeing that we hover around .500 with these guys then it's time to start moving forward

4. Fortify the Offensive Line

This is our biggest weakness. We went from experienced linemen to old linemen seemingly overnight (though to be fair, many on this board saw it coming from a mile away). I'd love for us to sign Jordan Gross from the Panthers and draft Duke Robinson in the first round. If we can add another lineman (Unger, Herman Johnson) in the 3rd round that'd be huge. Bottom line we need at least two new offensive linemen.

5. Veteran LB

Karlos Dansby. He's my new Justin Smith

6. Move He Who Shall Not Be Named to #2 QB

I'm tempted to say make training camp an open competition. But I'm more inclined to say we should know by now if Campbell is our guy. If he is, committ to him long-term this off-season and firmly establish him as our guy for the next 5-7 years

7. Renewed Focus on Special Teams

I can't pinpoint exactly what the problem is but something needs to change right away, and it may probably have to start with letting Danny Smith go

8. Continue to Give Scott Campbell an Expanded Role in Player Personnel

I think this is happening regardless

9. Re-Sign DeAngelo Hall

I think they blew it last year when they didn't take advantage of a deep draft class at DB by selecting Justin Tryon. Hall has fallen into their lap and they shouldn't let him get away. They really can't do all that much better at this point

What would you do?

Re: If You Ran the Redskins...

1. Resign key players on the lines. Demetric Evans and Pete Kendall must be retained. I would offer DeAngelo Hall a contract for about 3 years and 12-14 million, with 4 million guarenteed. It will allow him to stay here, and compete for a starting role. If he thinks he can do better elsewhere, I doubt that, but more power to him.

1a. Announce the release of defensive backs coach Jerry Gray, Receivers coach Stan Hixon, and offensive line coach Joe Bugel.

2. Extend the contracts of Anthony Montgomery, Carlos Rogers, and Jason Campbell for 4-6 more seasons with larger-end signing bonuses.

3. Release Shawn Springs, Fred Smoot, James Thrash, Casey Rabach, and Todd Yoder. This will create an issue at corner, but right now, I feel like Griffin, Taylor, and Marcus Washington will all have a role on the 2009 Redskins. Springs probably won't play a 16 game season again, and offered the choice between extending him to lessen the cap hit, and moving on, I think we move on.

4. Announce the move of Jon Jansen from T to C. Colt Brennan becomes the 2nd QB, while Todd Collins stays on as the 3rd QB.

5. Chad Rinehart is the opening day starter at RG. Randy Thomas becomes a utility lineman, who works some at Center to help us out in a pinch.

6. We draft one of the many offensive tackles in this class with our first round pick, and he competes right away to start with Heyer.

7. We add a defensive lineman in the third round of the draft, a running back in the 5th, and our Center of the future in the 6th.

8. Redskins re-sign Leigh Torrence in camp after he gets cut by New Orleans, and make a play for Oakland Franchise CB Nnamdi Asomugha (probably an unsuccessful one), but Texans CB Dunta Robinson would be a nice consolation. Justin Tryon rounds out the depth. Redskins sign New Orleans WR Devery Henderson.

9. Corneilius Griffin, Jason Taylor, and Marcus Washington are all potential training camp releases, depending on how the youth does and how well they take care of their bodies in the offseason.

DT: Montgomery, Griffin, Golston, (rookie projection) Vance Walker (GT), Alexander
LB: Fletcher, Washington, McIntosh, Blades, Fincher, Khary Campbell

Agree about Evans, not as sold on Kendall. Curious to see what value Daniels and Buzbee bring in 2009. Sounds pretty fair on DeAngelo Hall

I'd hold on to Gray if possible. Would let Jackson go though

Fair enough

I'm torn on Springs, but I agree that it's probably time to move on. I think he's an Arizona Cardinal next season. I especially think it's ok to let him go now because it seems as though Horton has the safety spot solidly locked down and I'm confident that Doughty can be a decent backup. Had this not been the case, I'd have Springs back if for no other reason than safety help

Starting C? I let Collins walk

I start him at LG and, if my plan comes to fruition by 2010 opening day at the latest Thomas' spot at RG is taken by Duke Robinson

Any thoughts on who?

Interesting call on Torrence. We'd probably overpay for Nnamdi (though he'd most likely deserve it. Why Devery?

I think Taylor stays just to save face for VC

I wish we had two Mike Sellers.

Vertical factor. Moss, Kelly, Cooley, and Randle El all figure to be starters in the Zorn offense, with (hopefully) Kelly as the go to guy. I have Thomas as the first guy off the bench, but if Moss' hammy flares up, we don't have a reliable deep threat. I wouldn't say Henderson is reliable, but he does offer a ridiculous career yards per reception average, which makes him an asset to us.

Doesn't he have a bit of a reputation for dropping passes though?

Re: If You Ran the Redskins...

The other clear need on this team is that Fletcher is reaching the very last drop of the consecutive starts/reliability cup. Can Rocky play inside? I don't know if Blades ever will. We may keep Marcus if only that we can bump him inside in a pinch.

I'm sure. It's probably why New Orleans doesn't want him on the field.

Still for what he would cost, I'd be ready to pull the trigger. We really badly need a gunner on punt team as well.

Cool Re: If You Ran the Redskins...

1. Sign Michael Jordan. Why? Because he's freaking Michael Jordan.

2. Clear cap space for 2010 when Lebron James, Chris Bosh, and Steve Nash become free agents.

3. Scrap points one and two. I just realized that basketball players won't help a football team. Then again Lebron and Bosh would make a hell of a receiving corps especially with Nash throwing to them.

However in all seriousness I feel like it's way to early to decide what I'd do. So much of it depends on who's the head coach next year. In all honesty I kind of think it would be more fun to play this game if we considered Cowher coming here next year, but the more level side me seems to think that Zorn really should stay as head coach and as well as the fact that we really need to get out of this endless cycle of turnover that has been a hallmark of the Snyder era. Still there are things that need to be done weather or not Zorn stays or goes.

- DeAngelo Hall needs to be resigned. I don't care if it's a contract comprable to what the Raiders gave him, the guy can play and so far he's kept a low profile. On top of that he wants to be here, this was the team he grew up rooting for, and it's not like we're not competive.

- Get a pass rushing OLB. One way or another we're going to need this, weather we end up with a 3-4 system under Cowher or the same system under Blache. Personally I think that Blache's schemes technically are more ideal for a LB that can pass rush then a DE that can get to the Quarterback as from what I've seen Blache doesn't seem to give the DE's a whole lot of leeway when it comes to getting after the passer as he's hell bent on stopping the run most of the time. And of course if we switch to a 3-4 well this is a given. Still amongst all turmoil the defense is definately not to blame.

- Situation permitting a DT to replace Griffin with the ability to get a push inside. I personally find it hard to fault our DT's consdiering how we've been effective agaisnt the run most of the time but some of the people around here have a point in regards to the situation as it relates to our pass rush. Again though addressing the alternate universe possibility a quality NT that could rotate with Montgomery would be ideal.

- Really start to think about Campbells future. Do I want to give this guy a lot of money to stay and hope that after all this time he ends up with an Eli like breakthrough or do I consider letting Collins and Colt duke it out in training camp. The funny thing is the franchise tag might be the way to go.

- Name names on the O-Line. I'm tired of hearing oh we need to blow up the O-Line like there will be no consequences. Yeah screw the salary cap get rid of Jansen thats still 9 million against the cap in a year in which we will be hard pressed for space. Especially with the possibility of signing two top flight corners.

Wanna get rid of Randy Thomas? Lol, r u touched in head? We can't feasibly get rid of him until Obama has to run for office again. I personally would seriously consider moving Jansen to LG considering the requirements for the position and his current skillset. And if Rhinehart shows he can play RT these next few games then we might have ended up finding something special. Plus if theres a better option available at Center then consider letting Rabach go. Gross is also a free agent that should get serious consideration even though we probably won't be able to afford him.

- Listen to Wilbon and draft players in the trenches. I don't want to hear about some Draft Board you got etched in stone especially considering the fact that you remind me of those crazy religous people that always seem to have God conviently on their side when defending their point of view no matter how wrong it is. To put it in simpler terms I think Vinny is either full of shit or manipulating the board to favor recievers. Rod Gardner, L. Coles, C. Russel, T. Jacobs, B. Lloyd. Thats funny considering the fact that we were able to get productive play out of Samuals and Jansen since 2000 and yet this team is still hell bent on finding recievers. Even the Falcons who at the time reached for Matt Ryan knew they had to build up front. Ironically this is one of the reasons I want Cowher, in giving him full control will all but insure that the team finally focuses on fortifying the trenches.

- Consider pouncing on the possibility of finding a RB in FA or the draft (around the 2nd or 3rd round) to help take the load off Portis. I love the guy but I fear that pretty soon he won't be able to walk let alone play considering the beating he's took since his time here in Washington. In an ideal world I would like to find the next Michael Turner (technically the one that backed up LT in San Diego). At the very least draft Sellers replacement around the 5th or 6th round and consider giving the big man more carries.

- NO MORE RECIEVERS. YOU'VE MADE YOUR BED NOW LIE IN IT. If anyone in the Redskins FO makes a serious attempt for CJ I will find you and when I do I shall unleash the fury to end all furies. You got 4 big guys to throw to USE THEM (for those of you counting at home Thomas, Kelly, Davis, Cooley).

That will be all for now.

Re: If You Ran the Redskins...

1. Re sign Hall. He will be the leader of the secondary. I would sign Hall (for the right price) before I sign Rogers
2. Release M. Washington: I think we all know why
3. Sign at least two big name free agents (preferreably on each line). Synder has surprisingly gotten away from the big splash the last few offeasons.
4. Draft an OLB in the first round. (Rey Malauga USC)
5. I agree with you D-Bag359 we need to look for a quality back in the 3rd round to get Portis and Betts some air.
