Rogers benched in favor of Hall once again

Blache: Springs, Hall to Start

I'm not sure what word I can use to describe my feelings, but I guess I could say I'm somewhat intrigued by this move.. Rogers have been pro bowl year this year (IMO) - however he plays really good when he's playing man on man.. Not so well in cover.. But does this move would really help defense? Beside the intercept part..

I'm not really sure what to make of this. Maybe they want to check Hall out before resigning him or maybe send Rogers a message about holding on to the ball. Possibly both.

Re: Rogers benched in favor of Hall once again

Honestly I'm not surprised. The coaches know that Synder will throw more money at Hall given his "big name" and playmaking ability. They are clearly sending the message to Rogers or whoever that Hall is the #1 CB not Rogers. Whether its unfair or not I personally think Hall has outplayed Rogers to start. It will be interesting if they re-sign both because I think this move tells me their #1 priority is to sign Hall this offseason.

GB is putting who he thinks will do the best job on the field. He could give a crap about next year.

I like CR. He's had a very good year. He hasn't looked good recently though. He literally feel asleep last week on that TD throw. He wasn't even ready. I don't know what he was doing. That's enough to get you benched. He's done that before too. It's like he loses interest or something.

Re: Rogers benched in favor of Hall once again

Earlier in the year, whenever a team would throw on Rogers, I would turn to my wife and say "you can't throw on #22". I haven't watched him really closely in recent weeks, but my feeling is that his play has slipped. He certainly was beaten badly by Chris Henry last week. That was an ugly play. I haven't been particularly impressed with Hall (apart from his undeniable ball skills) but it seems Greg Blache and/or Jerry Gray love the guy. The trend away from Rogers still does not make a lot of sense to me, unless the coaches have seen on the coaches tape what I have vaguely perceived by watching the games on TV; that Rogers play has declined. Now, if this is setting up a move where they give Hall big money instead of extending Rogers then that will be a huge mistake.

I posted this in another thread but:

I think that Rogers recent struggles are part of the reason why Hall is getting the start.
Rogers play seemed to decline after that dropped pick against the Steelers. He later gave up an easy TD to Holmes using off coverage on the goaline(I wonder if it was the defense design to be in off-coverage, but i don't understand why he would play off-coverage near the goaline).
Got toasted on a double move in the Ravens game when he was in 0 coverage and knew he wouldn't have safety help.
Then against the Bengals he was on the goaline in off coverage and barely put up a fight and gae up a fade route TD.

I put no blame on rogers for that play. Our defense blitzed everyone and mason still had plenty of time to do a double move. If you are covering someone and you know that your defense is blitzing everyone, you would think that the quarterback would be sacked or throw the ball away in a matter of a couple seconds.

What has Hall done to make you not impressed? He is not getting beat deep (like he was in Oakland), or given up a touchdown since he's been with us. He is making plays and he knows has hands. Rogers has always been a guy that was solid but never a pro bowl guy. I don't think they "love the guy" they just have seen better play frrom Hall than they have of Rogers lately.

Re: Rogers benched in favor of Hall once again

I think the fact that Springs (not just Hall) starting over Rodgers shows that something must be going on behind the scenes with CR and the coaching staff. Springs has two games left as a Skin and Rodgers is locked up for a few more years if I am not mistaken. There is no reason to play Springs over Rodgers IMO unless Rodgers has a bad attitude or isn't giving 100% in practice.

To me, it looked like he basically gave up on the TD last week. Didn't he also kind of blame the coaches for the TD he gave up against the Ravens as well?

I think that's the case. I remember when Hall was signed there was plenty of talk about how the egos in the secondary would handle the addition of another pro-bowl caliber player. Maybe Rogers hasn't handled it well and it shows through his play. You'd hope it would work the other way around and we'd see him stepping up rather than falling off.

Thats a good point. I agree Rogers must not be taking the Hall signing as a good thing (and his play is showing it). As of now he is losing out on a new contract with us to Hall.

Re: Rogers benched in favor of Hall once again

This is exactly what is wrong with the Redskins. Why would you bench a young corner and let a guy who never comes to the off season work outs, is the highest payed guy on the team, is rarely ever healthy in the time he has been here, and has never been willing to modify his contract for the good of the team. The season is over and if we keep Springs next year it would be more stupid then cutting Liegh Torrence. So why would you play him, the only reason I can think of is the coaches are worried about thier jobs.

Re: Rogers benched in favor of Hall once again

It's pretty simple, Hall and Springs can catch, Rogers can't. Hall makes plays, Rogers doesn't. I've got no issues with this. I'd be fine with D. Hall as our #1 CB going forward. If Rogers resigns he'd be better as a #2.

I agree. Hall has been more of a playmaker in the month he's been here than Rogers has in 3 years. At this point, I agree resigning hall is the #1 priority in the offseason. There is no reason to resign Rogers any time soon. let him continue to play out his rookie contract. If he and Hall prove to be a good starting tandem next year, then we can think about extending him during the season. I beleive the rules regarding a potentially uncapped 2010 would result in Rogers not becoming a FA until 2011 anyways.

On a side note, Rogers has been struggling with some kind of illness that just wont go away - so i think that is closely related to his recent performance drop.
