Second Round OT Talent
A popular conversation recently has been trading down in the draft to gain extra picks; however, doing so means ruling out andre smith, and probably michael oher unless we stay above the eagles (and lions if they go QB with #1 overall). So, based on the assumption that the two of them are gone, that leaves the following players in the 2nd-3rd rd range:
Eben Britton William Beatty Duke Robinson Phil Loadholt Jamon Meredith Fenuki Tupou So, who are you high on and who would you be afraid of drafting? Finding a starter at RT among these would be incredible for the o-line, and if trading down also lets us pick up a LB or Alex Mack, then I think it's a no-brainer to move down. |

Re: Second Round OT Talent
It is becoming increasingly doubtful in my mind that there will be a team willing to pay a heavy price to move up to #13. I am thinking that both top QBs will be gone so the best chance might be if some other team (Detroit, Jets, or Tampa Bay) feels that they have to move up to ensure they get Josh Freeman. Unfortunately trading with Detroit would get us a first and third rather than a second, so some of the guys you mention would likely be gone. Tampa doesn't have a second (K2) and dealing with the Jets would require including our third.
Anyway, of the guys you mention I like Britton (but he will go in the first most likely) and I really like Jamon Meredith (but I think he can go pretty high as well). But if the Skins could move down and get Britton (likely later in the 1st) or somehow nab Meredith in the 2nd (which would be pretty lucky since I don't think he makes it to the 50s) I would be quite pleased. Below are some potential trade partners: Quote:

Britton: He has very short arms. Not a good thing for an OT. Other than that, there's a lot to like about him. I wonder if he won't end up at Guard. Beatty: He just doesn't seem to have the kind of base I'd like to see in an OT. He's very athletic, though. He might be a good pick. Robinson: I just think he's a Guard. Good player. Loadholt: I'm a Phil Loadholt fan. He's a good fit at RT, IMO. Every time I tuned in to an OU game to watch Robinson, Loadholt caught my eye. Meredith: I haven't seen him play. He has some supporters on this site, so he might be a good player. Tupou: Not interested. He's just not much of an athlete, IMO. |

Philadelphia (picks 21 and 53 - 1170; pick 13 - 1150) Philly's got another first rounder to play with even if they trade one; they are hungry for an OT, and if andre smith is still there at 13, I can definitely see them moving up to grab him. Minnesota (picks 22 and 54 - 1140; pick 13 - 1150) This one's more unlikely; probably won't happen unless sanchez drops to 13 New England (picks 23 and 47 - 1190; pick 13 and 5th - approx. 1185.5) or (picks 23, 58, and 4th - approx. 1134; pick 13 - 1150) NE is going after a linebacker in the first round, if Maualuga or 's still available at 13, which is likely, I can easily see them trading up. They have a ton of picks to play with so this one's a real possibility. If they're looking for OLB first and ILB second, this might not happen because there are a number of good OLBs in the first round (Everette Brown, Brian Cushing, Tyson Jackson). I think they'd prefer to take Maualuga here though. Atlanta (picks 24, 55, and 4th - approx. 1142; pick 13 - 1150) Atlanta would also be looking to take a higher level DE/OLB, so if there's one they particularly like when it comes to pick 13, this might happen. Less likely though... Miami (picks 26 and 44 - 1160; pick 13 - 1150 ... plus kick to Cerrato's groin for having to drop 13 spots to get back pick 44) haha yeah seriously... this also looks less likely; if they trade up it would probably also be to get a LB Detroit (picks 20, 65, and 5th; pick 13) Only scenario I can see is if they go OT with the first pick and want Sanchez NY Jets (picks 17 and 52; picks 13 and 80) If Sanchez is still available, that's all I can see... So I guess hope that Sanchez drops to 13? I think most likely we'd trade with NE to give them a LB they like. I'd also say Philly, but I don't really think andre smith will fall to us. If he does then I'd say that's the trade most likely to happen. Wow, I sort of hijacked my own thread. Back to the 2nd rd OTs.... |

Re: Second Round OT Talent
The two I like the best so far are Loadholt and Beatty. That being said, I don't really know THAT much about them so I'm open to persuasion haha...
I favor Loadholt because he's a big guy that's physical and dominant in the run game. According to scouting reports his biggest liabilities are a lack of quickness to match up with speed rushers, and apparently he's not the sharpest tool in the shed. We'd be starting him at RT though, so speed rushers wouldn't be as much of an issue, and if we have the rest of the o-line knock some sense into him perhaps he won't be as much of a poor off-the-field decision maker as the scouts think... Beatty seems good because he's athletic enough to really shine in pass protection, which is the main reason we need to upgrade RT. That being said, I'd really prefer a big fatty to pave the way for portis. How good could our running game be if we could power run left AND right. And plus just to throw his name out there again, I just watched some scouting video and reports on Alex Mack and I must say, he seems like a really cool guy. Almost like a Chris Cooley personality. He's smart and dominant at the line, I really hope we find a way to take him; he's an immediate starter IMO. If we can release Rabach that'll save us a nice meaty chunk of cap room. |

I typically shy away from finesse types but in systems like ours where we rely on a guy like Portis to make quick cuts and outside runs we benefit from someone with quick feet. Hell thats how Denver has made a living with the running game through the Shannahan years. Still I don't think Britton is a 2nd round OT. We'll be very lucky if we can trade back about 6 or 8 spots and get him. Either way he's possibly my new favorite at tackle. Also for those of you hell bent on protecting our QB Awareness - 1 - Elite in this category. Rarely misses assignment. Keeps head on swivel and recognizes stunts as well as blitzes. "Eben Britton has played both offensive tackle positions and brings an exciting combination of speed, wingspan, strength and field intelligence. Pro scouts are likening his ability to the Cleveland Browns' Joe Thomas."

Re: Second Round OT Talent
I have Mack ranked as my 4th best OLman, regardless of favored position:
1. Jason Smith 2. Michael Oher 3. Eugene Monroe 4. Alex Mack 5. Andre Smith Those are the guys who have a top 20 grade on my draft board.

Re: Second Round OT Talent
Hmm, what makes you like Oher so much? I'd be interested to know your breakdown of these top 5, and perhaps the next 2 or 3 on the list.

Re: Second Round OT Talent
It would be absolutely great and immediately upgrade our O-line if we could trade down then get Mack and a T (Oher might be wishful thinking but maybe Britton?).. But once again, we would have to consider about LB situation

We saw what happened when W. Holdman was well past his prime & we had to start him in 06. Certainly don't want to see a repeat of that, but the fact is this team is once again short of draft picks to really get quality players on day 1 to compete for starting jobs. If they have to sacrifice a position this year, I wouldn't mind seeing the defense given less priority. The offense really needs to have a good year, get JC a new contract & boost confidence in Zorn as coach & play caller. |
