My Draft Trade Proposal with New England. Feedback Needed!!!

I have a proposal for the warpath to consider.

Currently we only have one pick in the first day. It is in the 1st round at #13. Our next pick is in the second day in the 3rd round at #80. That is a difference of 67 spots between draft picks. So, theoretically, 67 of the best players in college football players will be taken after we pick at #13 overall.

I believe we can find a suitable trade partner in the New England Patriots. They have a gang of draft picks (WikiAnswers - How many draft picks do the New England Patriots have in 2009), and they have been rumored to want to use their draft picks to move up and secure a LB at #13 overall. Currently they hold the 23rd overall pick. Ten spots down from us. They also have the #34 overall pick. The 34th overall pick is 46 spots before our next pick in the 4rd round at #80 overall.

According to the NFL Draft pick value chart (NFL draft-pick value chart - NFL - ESPN), our first round pick at #13 is worth 1150 points, and the 3rd round pick at #80 is worth 190 points. This gives us a grand total of 1340.

New England's 1st round #23 pick (760), second round #34 pick(560), and sixth round #199 pick combined equal 1332.8 points.

END RESULT
New England - #13 overall and #80 overall (in addition to their already stack arsenal of picks. This would actually give them three 3rd round picks (#80, 89, and 97). So, for the most part, this would look good to their front office.

Washington - #23, #34, and #199.

This will shorten the distance between our first two picks from 67 spots to 11 spots, and we gain a additional 6th round pick.

This will allow us to choose from a better talent pool at the end of the 1st and beginning of the 2nd rounds, rather than choosing from the upper-mid 1st and 3rd rounds. The extra pick in the 6th round can be used for who knows, and that is what I want the warpath to answer.

If we were to pull off this trade, who would you take at #23, #34, and #199 and why? Then, please discuss with the Warpath.

As far as the point value of the picks, it makes sense. But NE doesn't like to give big money to rookies, and they seem to like to stockpile picks, not give them up. I like the idea of finding a trade partner to move down and acquire more picks, I'm just not sure it will be NE.

There might be one problem with this scenario, there are only three sure thing/can't miss OLB's in this draft, Arron Curry (Wake Forest) will be a top 3 pick, Brain Orakpo (Texas) will be picked in the top 5 picks, maybe dropping no lower than #7 pick and Everette Brown (Florida State) is expected to go around #9. The other OLB's are not worth trading up for. So trading for our #13 is not worth it for NE. They need to get in the top 9 picks.
If they want an ILB, Rey Maualuga and James Laurinaitis are the best and James Laurinaitis is expected to still be there when NE picks at #23. It will really come down to who is there at #13 and if NE is really wants that player. If Rey Maualaga is still there at #13 then a trade offer might happen, but I doubt it if James Laurinaitis can be had at #23.

Orakpo isn't a can't miss OLD prospect simply because he hasnt played any OLB while at Texas. The Patriots are hot on all 3 of the USC guys, so they will be looking to move up to secure at least one of them.

Cushing, Matthews, and Rey can play all of the positions for New England.

ENough of that. Put on your GM hat and answer the question WP.

The thread title makes it sound like there's actually a possible draft trade with NE. Anyway, I think draft trades need to happen the day of the draft, depending on who slides down and what do teams that are in the bottom of the first round are looking for.

There are many combinations we could use with NE if they are interested. Check out post #48 on the "What would you do with the 13th pick, use it or trade it?"

I like the trade just because i think we could get a couple of solid players who could contribute next season (mack, unger or an end like ayers) That to me, would be a solid beginning to a draft. Who knows maybe Oher will slip down that far and then we'd get a tackle for much cheaper.

Good insight.

Thanks for being the first to contribute to the thread and not criticize the concept/trade.

Yeah, it would be a great trade for the Redskins. New England would never do it. They understand that you get great value with picks at the top of the second round (which is one reason they dealt Cassell for #34). Look at their history of draft day trades. They trade down, not up. Good thinking (in terms of trading down and stocking up more picks) but this trade would not happen.

I agree that NE probably wouldn't be interested in trading with us but then again you never know.
I think they'll stand pat and draft guys like Clay Matthews and Donald Brown in the second round rather than trade up.
It's a nice thought though.

Wouldn't mind this happening, the problem is that NE wouldn't do this..if this happens we could get William Beatty of UConn with the second rounder, and clay Matthews with the other

From what I'm hearing Barwin is a good guy to get too. He can play three positions including LB. I think he and Mathews are on the same level. If we could get a low first and a second out of this I'd take Barwin or Mathews and then get Mack with the second. That's a need and upgrade.

With Barwin we can have a DE or LB.

With Mack we can have a C and a G.

Which? Which ever makes our team better.

I wouldn't be against getting a OT that's available either.

Soon we shall all know.
