As to "Last Rites", not completely sure, but as I recall it is actually the combination of two sacraments: annoiting the sick and penance and, as with all other sacraments, involve outward signs of inward grace. It involves prayer but also ritual and symbolism. As part of the penance, there is absolution - it is essentially, a last confession and, as part of the annoiting, a request for blessing on the terminally ill person.
