Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Panthers)
With apologies to DCPSR, I didn't want to wait to lay the smack down. So I'm going to temporarily divert from the new plan and post it directly on here today.
Let's get right to it. Time to lay the smack down Jim Zorn Raise your hand if you're secretly hoping we keep losing up until the bye week just to end this failed Zorn as HC experiment and put us all out of our misery. Seriously though, I'm obviously not rooting for a Redskins loss ever, but Zorn is way overmatched. No timeouts with 8 minutes left that's poor coaching in my opinion. Especially the 4th down timeout. Always know before 3rd down what you would do on the 4th down. Nice guy it seems, and I hope he continues to have success in the NFL, but this just isn't the place for him. Stephon Heyer Wow. I mean just wow. That "block" on the safety may just have been the ugliest block I've ever seen in football. That was u-g-l-y...and he ain't got no alibi Byron Westbrook This is like Special Teams 101. Don't get blocked into your own guy. Especially when he's the returner trying to make a fair catch with the lead in the 4th quarter. Westbrook's second special teams mistake this year (at least), following the whiff on Hunter's beautiful punt inside the 5 against the Giants DeAngelo Hall Nice job with the INT but how do you let Jake Delhomme go Allen Iverson 2002 on you and break your ankles on a 3rd and 8? You got posterized by Delhomme...on a running play? Sad dude, sad President Joe Gibbs Say what? You're going to hate on Gibbs? Saint Gibbs? Blasphemous! It's all Vinny's fault....Let's get this straight. Huge, Kim Kardashian's derrier-huge Gibbs fan. But before we get on Vinny for not drafting linemen let's not forget it was Gibbs who was in charge who called for us to trade a 3rd and a 4th for Brandon Lloyd and a 3rd for TJ Duckett. With some more picks maybe we could have done more to address our needs. Thinking Orakpo wasn't a good draft pick Ridiculous. Orakpo was a great, great pick. He will be a beast of a pass rusher. And if we hadn't drafted him there'd be chants of "why didn't we draft a pass rusher" Drafting Orakpo wasn't the problem. But not giving him more playing time at DE where he can actually rush the passer probably is. Browns vs. Bills Just wanted to throw this in here because it was so horrible. Derek Anderson goes 2-17. 2-17. And he was the winning QB! So what now? Well, who really knows. I guess the big question is how soon until Mike Shanahan takes over. Forget all this talk about Shanny not coming here. If we want him bad enough, we'll get him. In my opinion, to sign him mid-season we have to offer him a lot. A lot! Head coach, president, general manager, probably some ownership stake. Shanahan in charge of personnel scares me. But it could easily happen. And it probably will. Personally, I'd rather just ride out the season and get a Bruce Allen, Reggie McKenzie, type and pair him up with a Russ Grimm, Brian Schottenheimer or even Kyle Shanahan. Either way, things look bleak right now.

Derek Anderson is gritty though, and a division champion.
Or at least I was assuming. I was in a coma for the final three games of the 2007 season.

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Panthers)
This was a complete organizational loss. Yes, i believe Kevin Sheehan on the postgame said this, but I concur.
How so? Our depth is bad, our coaching is not going to out scheme any other team, and the FO chose the coach who can't outscheme anyone. I think we need to blow up about 50% of this team. First we gotta bring in a football guy, as our GM. This game is not on JC but damn, good qb's make up for bad o lines more often than not. Our o line play was putrid though. Horrible. Again, no depth, wasteful draft picks, picks given away that could provide depth. We basically scored 3 pts if it weren't for our defense. It's really hard to sit and watch this year in and year out. Of course i'll continue to watch but it's just really hard. |

Antoine Winfield would have pancaked Delhomme. Hall is soft.

Antoine Winfield is probably my favorite CB to watch play. He's awesome. Fast, VERY physical, great ball skills, excellent in coverage. He's a complete player. Hall is fast with great ball skills. That's about it.

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Panthers)
Hall has lived up to his past billing. He's probably been better in his 12 games for us then he has been at any 12 game stretch in his career.
You could argue that we got our money's worth, but certainly we're getting everything we could have possibly hoped for out of Hall. 3 picks in 5 games is a great, if unsustainable, rate.

I think Hall screwed up there, but Hall also saved the TD on 4th and goal on the 1. Definitely needs props for that.

Well I know something that still sucks from last year, our f-ing O-Line. No improvement there. I guess the FO will start worrying about that later...

I called Jim Zorn a great coach before the year started? I really should be taking a terrible beating from you people for that thread.

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Panthers)
Zorn apears doomed.
Heyer, the team is looking for the first opportunity for someone better. Westbrook, poor judgement, must be aware of where his return man is at all times. D. Hall, poor effort on the atempted tackle of Delhomme in the open field. Was a key play at that point in the game. Credit for the INT & return, like to see his tackling improve. Orakpo is a beast, just playing out of position so early in his pro career. With more experience is going to be a great player. I've said before, we don't know the outcome of the Zorn situation just yet, but (aside from money) I don't have a clue as to who would want this job under the current circumstances. |

On the other hand I took a good beating for my "Jason Campbell is not what I thought" thread after the first game last year and that one is turning out to be ok I guess.

Exactly how can you tell if you QB, RB, WR or TE are developing if you can get anything off because of lack of protection.

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Panthers)
NICE SMACKDOWN
TWO things SS: TRUE, Gibbs hands are dirty in some of the personnel moves. BUT you have to give VC the lions share since that time and some before, although it is difficult to tell what his role really was in previous years. Not horrific, but not good, and to many bad moves especially on FA's AND, AND.....the kiss of death...he hired Zorn
