Mike Shanahan elaborates on what Redskins' defense will be
Sounds like a 3-4 base isn't necessarily set in stone

Nice sidestepping of the question without really saying anything new about Haynesworth....love that he is, at face value at least, trying to adapt the scheme to the personnel though

Seems like we are going to do hybrid style, just like Arizona's? If we actually are going to use 3-4, I really hope the transition would go smoothly, just like Green Bay did last year..
Edit: at the ending, Shanahan sounded like if Redskins coaches will create their own version of 3-4 style.. |

Believe me its 3-4, shanahan just doesn't want coaches around the league to start planing for it. It's been known for a while, he's just trying to throw you off or think of something else to get you to think "Ohh maybe its going to be a 4-3 instead"

Re: Mike Shanahan elaborates on what Redskins' defense will be
i agree that shanahan has no reason to admit we're switching to a 3-4 right now. however, i also agree that he'd be a complete moron to switch to a base 3-4 with the current personnel we have in place. As of right now, the only prototypical 3-4 player we've added to our defense is a NT who can't even pass a physical. we had a shortage of good linebackers when running the 4-3 - there's no way we can switch to the 3-4 without acquiring alot more talent. free agency is dwindling down. we only have 5 draft picks and, by all appearances, we won't be drafting anyone before the 4th round who doesnt play offense. there's plenty of time before our 53-man roster is finalized, but unless/until we do a significant overhaul of our defensive front 7, i think the chances are we'll be keeping a base 4-3 for another year.

I think he wants teams to believe that we still might nab Suh or G. mccoy, thus giving us some leverage for trades. Or maybe takings one of those guys is a real possibility?

MS he's looking to trade out of #4 & pick up more picks. IMO. Don't show your hand.

Re: Mike Shanahan elaborates on what Redskins' defense will be
^^ I would love to trade out of the 4 and get more picks. The offensive line talent is so deep in this draft we could get our OL of the future in this draft alone.

This is what you get when you have a true professional coach. A guy who'll take what he has in personnel and make a scheme to maximize it.

To paraphrase: Are we a 4-3? Maybe when camp comes around we'll realize we're more of a 4 man front kind of team. Or maybe we're a 3-4. Will we be more like Pitt, Dal, NE, or SD? Who really knows? You can't really make those decisions until you see how your personnel plays. Shanahan talked for a while and basically said nothing.

It may depend on when Kemo is ready. Phat Al obviously doesn't want to be a full time nose so they need Kemo to fill that role. Although I think a front 4 of Carter (Jarmon, Lorenzo), Godzilla, Kemo and Philip Daniels is disgusting. I love how big our defensive line has become. |
