Redskins Roster By Position

As we come into the draft, in addition to who's been signed and who's been cut, I thought it might also be good to take a look at the roster as it actually exists. This way we can see 1) what positions have been stocked up; 2) what "real" depth exists (almost no where); and 3) where we seem to need bodies. I got this from the Redskins site and grouped it by position rather than alphabetically (the positions are as listed on the Redskins Site):

5 McNabb, Donovan QB 6-2 240 11 11-25-1976
17 Campbell, Jason QB 6-5 230 5 12-31-1981
8 Grossman, Rex QB 6-1 217 7 08-23-1980

Good thread bro'. It's really not as shabby a roster as 4-12 made it seem.

Re: Redskins Roster By Position

Yeah. Looking at the list I was thinking "okay, we can go 7-8 deep along the line, 6 deep at LB, 3 deep at RB, 4 deep at WR, and the OL... uhhhh 2 deep??"

Really, looking at that list and you have 3 guys (maybe) who could be marginal starters/solid back ups on other teams and that's it.

Re: Redskins Roster By Position

I kinda, slightly, slightly disagree. The middle of our line ought to be good. Both G spots are set, Dockery is a decent starter, and I think Mike Williams will be a staple there, and Hicks is a definite good backup. Center has a starter in Rabach, and I think a backup in E. Williams.

LT will be our draft pick-assume that will be a Probowler for the next thousand years, back up is shaky.

Then you get to the Right tackle and it all falls apart, but Jared Veldheer has never given up a sack except the one GTripp saw

Re: Redskins Roster By Position

Dockery, Rabach are average at best. Williams? I hope he can be a solid guy - just not sold on it. Rinehart? Hasn't shown much yet. Hicks is a solid 6th man, and possible starter. Williams might be a solid back up.

If we draft an OT, we pray he's not the next Ryan Clady and not the next Robert Gallery. Counting on any rookie to come in and shore up a need position is risky at best. Yes, early first round OT's are generally pretty solid bets - but the draft is a crapshoot.

A couple of average starters - (guys who most teams are looking to replace so they can be used as back-ups), a couple of question marks, and lots of bodies. Really, if we cut our entire line, how many would be out of football for good - pretty much all but Dockery, Rabach, Hicks and possibly a couple of the young guys on potential (E. Williams, Rinehart). Of these guys, how many would start on an OLine for a winning team? Maybe Dockery... maybe. All the rest would be back-ups at best - and maybe not even the primary back up but a back bencher.

^ I agree Joe. I think it will take a couple of years to build an OL that we can be proud of.

Re: Redskins Roster By Position

Mike Shannahan's 2nd Superbowl team didn't have one OL player higher than a 5th rounder. To say our guys can't be coached up, and made better by having a scheme that actually makes the opposing defense think, I don't think is quite right. I am not saying we don't need to get more talent, but I believe that we will see a lot better play from the guys that eventually make the squad. It is hard enough to play OL, but when you are changing positions on a regular basis like Zorn had our OL doing last year, it is an impossibility.

I hope one other major change from Zorn's approach to game day is roster stability from week to week.

Re: Redskins Roster By Position

Joe, I agree about Dockery and Rabach. I dont know why so many people think either position is ok. Its a testament to the atrociousness of our line when those are our two best linemen. anywhere else, dock would be fighting for his starting job and Rabach would be a backup. When I look at our line, all i see are four or five very good backups a whole lot of garbage. there's not a bonafide starter among them. At this point, i'm not really interested in Okung. I'd rather trade down and acquire two or three actual starting caliber linemen (even if they were just average - they'd atleast constitute upgrades). once we're at that point, THEN we can afford to splurge on a top tier OT.

Just b/c your drafted in the 5th round or lower doesn't mean you aren't talented. Schereth was 12th rounder (I think) and played in the league for over 10 years. It's not where these guys came from that's the problem, it's that they have demonstrated a lack of talent. Will average talent be improved by a good scheme and good coaching? Yes. Do the guys we have rise to the level of even average talent? Maybe 3-5 guys do. So yes, it will be improved. Is it still gonna be a crappy line with no depth.

You're just wrong as always and if you don't shut up -- I'll punch you.

Frankly, You are an idiot, and saying that these guys have demonstrated a lack of talent, when they were shuffled to a different position every week is just arrogant. And then you go and say that

Re: Redskins Roster By Position

All I know is our f*ing Tackles at this point suck a$$. And our interior OLine is average at the very very best. I know this by watching Skins the play the last couple years. I dont see any new names that say we are going to be better at this point.

The new blocking scheme this year may help a couple...but who? Who do we see on the current team where we say "breakout year in the new scheme"...i really dont know

Yeah...so many lineman, but not enough!

If we can add 2 quality Tackles before the season (a Center would be great too), we should be fine.
