Angry Paging Warpath Doctors - weird injury

OK, had a strange occurrence last evening and wondering if anyone else has experienced this or can diagnose it. (I know...I tell people to go to real doctors in these threads...my turn.)

I was curling with a curl bar last evening. Did 25 reps, sat the bar back down and my left pointer finger would not move. Did not feel anything happen, felt fine up to the point where I let go of the bar. It was locked in the position that it was when holding the bar. I was later able to straighten it out (with pain). It is still sore at the knuckle joint closest to the hand, and I can straighten the finger itself but can't raise it all the way level with the other fingers. Not broken, I can make a fist without pain and grasp rightly with it. Picked up my son this morning with no pain but I can't raise it all the way up and it hurts when I try.

Is is possible to pull or strain a finger muscle? Pinched nerve maybe? Anyone ever have this strange thing happen?

I was benching right before that with a lot more weight and nothing went wrong.

Treatment?

Gonna give it a few days of rest to see if it straightens out, literally.

I just switched from upper body to abs and legs...wasn't going to let a dead finger steal my workout completely.

Pictures of it:

This is a serious problem...you should get it amputated asap.

Re: Paging Warpath Doctor - weird injury

I think i might have a case of trigger finger. On my left ring finger it curls in. I had 2 pretty bad cuts there like 6+ years ago but no other injury since. About 1-2 years ago i woke up and notice my finger was kind of curling in. When i have a big night out the next morning its at its worst.

It starts curling half way up at the first joint. I can straighten that joint and the very top joint individually but i cant straighten both at the same time. It doesnt really hurt at all, unless i try to straight both at the same time, im pretty sure i would break it if i did that.

Matty, are you in healthcare?

When amputating a finger it is best to start at your jugular vein and work your way down. This is a fact!

Doesn't look like it. My finger itself straightens , it just doesn't go all the way up with the other ones...hurts at that first joint where the big knuckle is at your hand.

I'm thinking/hoping it's just a muscle strain.

So weird though, never felt an injury happen, it was just like that after I sat the weights down.

Sprained Finger | Health And Nutrition Tips

If you have never had a sprained finger, the chances are you might not truly understand how painful it can be. Another thing you might not realize is how many times each day you would normally use the finger that is injured. Both of these facts will quickly become apparent to anyone who suffers from a sprained finger.

A sprained finger is an injury that stretches the ligaments in the fingers, or the thumb if it is a sprained thumb. The most common way to injure a finger in the manner is to fall on your hand. A sprained finger is most often caused by a sports injury, and is especially common in the sports of football, basketball, and baseball. A finger sprain is painful, plus there is usually swelling and an inability to use the finger from a week to several weeks depending on the severity of the sprain.

If you suspect that you might have a sprained finger, check for these symptoms by answering these questions: Do you have pain over the joint where the injury took place? Do you have swelling in the same area? Is the mobility of your finger restricted? Does the finger feel unstable? And, do you have pain every time you try to bend your finger? If your answer to all of these questions is yes, you definitely have a sprained finger.

Re: Paging Warpath Doctor - weird injury

6,711 in 2 years is pretty high too.

Anyways, I think it's a sprain, going to CONTINUE icing it...will splint it too. If the pain doesn't go away, I'll see the doc.

Only hurts when it moves.

Insurance, read a lot of medical recs and have a lot of medical training, mostly dealing with ortho and soft tissue injuries
