Re: 35 Secrets Your Pilot Won't Tell You

In 2005, I was on a civilian plane flying from Fort Leonard Wood, MO, back to Dulles, VA. Shortly after takeoff, a right side rear engine blew. The engine remained unfunctional for the duration of the flight. I would not have been aware of this had it not been for the man seated beside me, a small craft pilot in the US Army, who seeing me in uniform, discreetly told me when it had happened, and assured that we would all be fine. The man told me it is not uncommon for a large commercial jet to sometimes lose 2 engines in a flight, and that 2 remaining engines are more than enough to limp the plane into the nearest airport for repairs.

I would take these with a grain of salt.

After reviewing this and had worked in the hotel industry for 10 plus years these are about 60% correct.

So it makes me thing the airline stuff is half true as well.

People always ask, ‘What’s the scariest thing that’s ever happened to you?’ I tell them it was a van ride from the Los Angeles airport to the hotel, and I’m not kidding.” -Jack Stephan

When we flew to Hawaii years back we got delayed in Los Angeles and the driver of the Van asked for everyone to sit down and hold on because he would be driving very fast for the next five minutes. He did.

Both my sister-in-law and her husband are pilots for Southwest and honestly, there's some straight up scary stuff that happens. At least 50% (they claim) of pilots go to work hungover. Lovely eh?

Re: 35 Secrets Your Pilot Won't Tell You

I always watch the crew to see if I should really be concerned or not. Flying to New Orleans last week we hit some rough turbulence and this woman just kept chatting away and was totally oblivious, like nothing was happening. It helped me stay calm.

A few things that grind my gears about flying, people that won't turn off their phones or gadgets and have to be asked to do so multiple times, and people that bring a salad on board to eat. Only on a plane does italian dressing smell like BO, what's up with that?

“At some airports with really short runways, you’re not going to have a smooth landing no matter how good we are: John Wayne Airport; Jackson Hole, Wyoming; Chicago Midway; and Reagan National.” -Joe D’Eon, a pilot at a major airline who produces a podcast at flywithjoe.com

I remember hearing back in the day that National Airport is one of the hardest airports to land in in the Nation. Thank God we usually leave from BWI.
