Gbtv!!!!!!!!!
Obviously this might turn a little political due to Beck’s views but the growth of GBTV is something to watch (intentional pun!). Ever since he launched this scheme ive said that I believe he is one of the few that I think could actually pull a cable like streaming content channel off and make it profitable and competitive with traditional mediums. If it works out I think we can start expecting a lot more of it, which is a great thing for consumers regardless of political identity.
How great would it be if channels like ESPN, FOX News, MSNBC, CNBC, TBS, History, Comedy Central and other channels you love became subscriptions based as a second option. I think that’s far away at this point but I think GBTV will serve as a model for other popular specific-interest-type channels to follow. I think this bodes well for other the channels out there that beat Beck to the punch but havent worked out all that well yet. He’s going to bring a lot of views and once they have the equipment in place for GBTV they are going to be interested in subscribing to other channels, like Opera’s for example. It should be interesting to see who follows suit next. I think a Hispanic content channel could be popular. I think a spin off type channel from espn or the like could do great. If the NFL network had gone this route instead I think it would be huge by now, although this may serve as a bargaining tool to challenge cable companies in the future. Beck is going all in and I personally believe it will work for him. It should be extremely interesting to see if this works out and serves as a model for other to follow. Re: Gbtv!!!!!!!!!
It should be interesting to watch the quality of the content and program shape after the initial launch. I signed up for the free trial and watched about 15 minutes of it yesterday before I had to turn it off. The couple minutes I did watch came off a little amateurish, although he did have some good guest. I hear a lot of the little armature issues are being blamed on a last minute switch, I believe of studios, from Texas back to NYC. Right now you can get GBTV on your computer, iphone, ipad and roku (Matty, i believe you have all 4 so youre really in luck! (jk)).
Regardless of what you think of him his old show on Fox News was put together EXTREMELY well on a daily basis. Im not sure if he kept everyone from his old staff, supposedly he had more researchers and writers than any other hour long “news” program. It also felt like he was just trying to do too much and present too much info in his first show. It’s the first show, they should of recorded it on 20 or 30 min delay…. Ill admit I used to watch Glenn Beck during his 9/12 Project stuff up to his Resorting Honor days (DC rally). But he goes through stages or ”acts” where he comes across contemptuous or condescending in a attackful way which is what gives him a bad name and lost viewers (like me). Honestly when he is “just asking questions” and pointing out the facts most media completely ignores he is at his best and offers a completely under-served but highly demanded perspective. The 10-15 minutes I saw yesterday was his spiteful self not the “let me present all the facts and let you form your own opinion” side. I jumped ship and now just have internet, a computer and a roku which is working out really well. The only thing I miss is a legit news program (I really like the Fox Report w Sheppard Smith) and few shows from CNBC, ESPN and Comcast SportsNet. Im also worried about college bball season. Im hoping GBTV is successful just because it will facilitate more online content. He going all in on this and regardless if you like him or not I think its best for everyone if he successful. For those interested about the show heres a good write-up: Glenn Beck successfully launches GBTV | Washington Times Communities

Re: Gbtv!!!!!!!!!
I think the concept and the validity of Beck's following are two separate things. Beck is a savvy businessman and entertainer, quite frankly. However, his ratings were taking a serious nosedive prior to his departure from Fox and was very likely why the two sides agreed to part ways. I guess the plus for Beck is that he can now control the content and production value of his program, whereas before he was beholden to the corporate big wigs and advertisers. I guess I'm wondering had Beck had another cable TV platform courting him, would he have gone in that direction instead of GBTV. It's neither here nor there at this point.
In terms of the future of a subscription based online model, I think it's going to happen sooner than we realize. I currently have a monthly online subscription with NetFlix, which allows me to watch thousands of movies, documentaries, and TV programs from my laptop. NetFlix has a partnership with Starz, the cable network, which expires next February. I have no idea how Netflix will replace Startz on their current menu, but it's possible that Starz wants a piece of that revenue for themselves. We'll see. |

Glenn is absolutely religious and he is a Mormon. But he doesnt discriminate against atheists, agnostics, or people of different denominations and more importantly he never forces his religious views on people. I would say every 1 in 25-50 times he references God he lets you know what he means by God. Beck often uses the line in the Deceleration of Independence for what he means by God: Quote:
When i first started to listen to Beck his occasional references to God turned me off, but once i heard him explain what he meant combine with the fact he doesnt force his beliefs on anyone i was cool with it.

He is absolutely a entertainer, but i would say hes more of a lucky then savvy business man. I think Fox and him splitting up was equal. He proved himself and became the most popular show ever at 5pm. He wanted equity and/or a better time slot and Fox said no. He felt disrespected and decided to do this GBTV thing he had been thinking about or planning as a side project. Thats my speculation. Neither Fox or him where stupid enough to burn bridges and hes still a occasional contributor to Fox so well probably never know. I think ratings to Glenn Beck are cyclical and dependent on whats happening politically; huge ratings leading up to 2010 historical elections, a drop off thereafter (this makes GBTV timing perfect with the major elections of 2012 around the corner). Also as i mentioned earlier he goes through phases or acts, his whole "e4" phase didnt resonate with me and a lot of others. Although after his nose dive I believe he was still one of the most popular shows of all time in the shitty 5pm slot and a top 10 show on cable news networks. I think he could have gone elsewhere, although likely under a year to year non-equity type contract. Again my speculation. I would highly suggest getting a Roku if youre planning to keep your netflix, it makes it a lot easier and really lets you use your subscription. A lot of the newer dvd/blueray players have netflix as a option too, plus xbox and i think playstation have netflix too if you have those. I think a blueray/dvd option is the cheapest.

Re: Gbtv!!!!!!!!!
Beck is like Palin, in that both are in it for a short period of huge profit. The demographics for Glenn are the same as Fox, white, late middle age to elderly, etc. Once these 60+ year olds start kicking the bucket, his reach/influence will wane. On top of that even when he cut the ties supposedly with Fox, he still verbally supports corporatist GOP candidates. This guy is for Perry or Romney, and if either one does win the WH and probably becomes Bush III, it will be game over for Mr. Beck and co.

Re: Gbtv!!!!!!!!!
I guess I'm just not understanding why the success or failure of streaming content hinges on Glenn Beck??
Streaming content was already well established before Beck came along, and how can someone with such a small niche audience have any sort of real impact anyway? |
