Who Stays; Who Goes? Defense

Taking the cue from Paintrain on this one, same as the other thread only defense this time. I imagine there will be some differing opinions on our favorite polarizing Redskin, aka D.Hall. I'll get this mofo started:

D-line:

Stephen Bowen: stays.

Kentwan Balmer: stays or goes? Idk, didn't see any action after he was signed, so it's up to the coaches and whether or not he impressed in practices and the offseason, etc.

Adam Carriker: stays. I thought he brought more than enough pass rush to the table as a 3-4 end, but his run d needs work. I'd be content keeping him next year though, and we will have Jarvis Jenkins back so we should have 3 nice players to rotate at defensive end.

Jarvis Jenkins: stays.

Barry Cofield: stays.

Chris Nield: stays. Had a quiet season after the first game, but if he keeps improving I see no reason as to why he goes.

Darrion Scott: we might seek an upgrade for our depth, or we might keep him. Idk. Too small sample size for me to tell, really.

Kedric Golston: sorry bro, you're not making this cut.

Chris Baker: stays if coaches are happy with him, never saw any pt so I don't have a clue if the coaches like him.

Doug Worthington: forgot all about this guy. Coaches decision.

LB:

Brian Orakpo: stays, unless we get a super awesome trade offer as outlined in other threads.

Ryan Kerrigan: What do YOU think?

London Fletcher: On a serious note, our linebackers are definitely a strength of this team. Of course it would be a serious blow if Fletch left. Git-r-done 'Skins.

Perry Riley: stays, was definitely happy to see him step up and take a bigger role towards the end of the season.

Rocky McIntosh: I feel like that story about him staying out past curfew and doing the old "pillows under the blanket" trick pretty much sums up how he feels about being with the Redskins next season. And I'm sure the feeling is mutual.

Rob Jackson: I'd be fine with him staying. If a better player comes along for a better price though, I wouldn't be against upgrading. Depth is one area where you can never truly be satisfied.

Lorenzo Alexander: I love what he brings to the table, but aside from ST I'm not sure the coaches like his value on defense. He's in the same boat as Rob Jackson imo.

Keyaron Fox: we could use an upgrade here, but if a better upgrade isn't out there he might be back.

Markus White: saw no pt on defense this year, so I have no clue. Coaches decision here.

Secondary:

I'll start with D.Hall: Definitely gives up his fair share of plays too, but he's an okay ballhawk in a defense devoid of them. If the coaches feel like he still has value, he stays. If they think we can do better, he's gone. Coaches call on this one.

Josh Wilson: stays, if for no other reason than the fact it would definitely be hard replacing two cornerbacks in the offseason, and if we were to get rid of one I think it would be D.Hall.

Phillip Buchanon: You can join Rocky McIntosh on the curb outside Redskins Park.

Kevin Barnes: he was hot and cold this season. If there's an upgrade out there, I'd go for it.

Byron Westbrook: definitely not a starter, but we could do worse as far as depth is concerned. Stays barring a major overhaul of the cornerbacks this offseason.

Brandyn Thompson: same boat as Westbrook.

Laron Landry: franchise him, and give him one more year, provided he's fully healthy, to redeem himself. Franchise tag for safeties is pretty cheap (I think like 6mil per.)

Reed Doughty: I like his hustle, but not much else. Doesn't really make plays. Average backup imo, but fans love to hate him. He does bring more to the table though with ST. If coaches feel we can do better, then upgrade. If not, I'm not against him returning another year. No more free safety for him though. He's not good in space.

OJ Atogwe: Definitely had an underwhelming year. I'd like to go young here. Coaches might want to as well.

Dejon Gomes: needs to bulk up if he wants to continue playing safety. Watching him bounce off Gronkowski was painful. He's got potential, but not much else right now.

Fletcher, and Barnes. Fletcher, because he is old as hell and the face of a defense that has been part of the worst franchise loss record in history. For 7 million I can get a starting LB and a nickel corner.

After dealing with every possible need on offense, I think the FO should focus on the safety position and getting a good secondary coach. As much as people b*tch about CBs, I think the coaches will keep the group that we have, maybe adding some late round players or free agents. However, the safety position is in shambles in my opinion. Who knows what will happen with Landry, and Atogwe really hasn't worked out due to health. This position has been plaguing the Redskins since Sean Taylor's passing, and it needs to be addressed in some way, shape, or form this offseason.

You know Darrel Green tweeted that he wants an opportunity to coach with the Redskins. Read the Redskins insider.

I read about that, hence my comment. I don't know if Green would be a good coach or not, but I think coaching has been as much of an issue as anything else with the secondary. While the defense should be a second priority next to the offense, I think (and hope) that the team needs to address the safety position and have a better secondary coach.

He would be a great coach!! 20 years CB experience, HOF, he coached Champ Bailey when he came into the league, Fred Smoot had his best years before he went to Minnesota, Green coached him as a player.

You should be slapped in the face for dissing Fletcher. The guy is probally older then you but in better shape then you and most of the team

I wouldn't mind seeing him as a secondary coach. I mean I think McCardell did a pretty good job as a WRs. Regardless of who it is, I hope they get someone else in that coaching position and set our secondary straight.

Darrel Green is my all time favorite Redskins player. With that said, it was always said that he played the position with very poor technical prowess. He made up for this with lighting speed that even the fastest CB's don't have. When Darrel Green was drafted he had to choose between the Olympics and the NFL. He had that kind of speed. His decision was made for him when the USA boycotted the Olympics.

Re: Who Stays; Who Goes? Defense

Does anyone know/remember how Singletary fared as a position coach? (we all know how he did as a HC) I think he was with Baltimore at one point coaching their linebackers. I was trying to think of good/elite players that have transitioned well to coaching positions.

Here are a few of the top of my head:

Emmitt Thomas
Ron Rivera
Dick Lebeau
Singletary
Jack Del Rio

Re: Who Stays; Who Goes? Defense

I was going to do this later this week so thanks for doing the heavy lifting for me! :-)

Gone on the DL: Balmer, Scott, Worthington, Golston, Baker

Gone from the LB: McIntosh, quitter, loser. No respect for his antics before the final game.

Gone from the CB: Barnes, yet another Cerrato whiff. Buchanon, just another guy who can be replaced.

Gone from S: Please let it be Doughty. He's awful, takes terrible angles, brings nothing to the defense. Landry I'm 50:50 on, Atogwe is probably one and done in DC. I think his legs are gone.

The defense is improved from last year but I think they hit the wall in December from being on the field so much and not getting any relief from the offense.

He was with Minnesota as a position coach this season. And I heard there were a lot of issues, skipping meetings, coming late to film sessions. This is a coach we're talking about. His priorities are elsewhere it seems.

And Champ and Rashad Bauman both told me (off the record) that they learned nothing from Green, because he doesn't teach technique at all since he relied so much on his god given talents. He's like Magic Johnson, not capable of teaching what he can do. He spent a spring "coaching" Justin Tryon. How's that working out?

Re: Who Stays; Who Goes? Defense

I'd be really surprised if London Fletcher was not re-signed. He has to be. He's the leader of the entire team.

I was a little harsh on LaRon Landry earlier in the year. But I'm hoping he finally makes a complete recovery and be apart of the Redskins in the future.

If John Beck isn't traded, then he'll be released. The Redskins will draft a QB and sign a veteran QB in free agency. I like the savvy of Rex Grossman, but he's a backup if anything. He's nothing more than that.

Rocky McIntosh has been a good Redskins since his rookie year of 2006. But it's time to part ways with him. He can still be effective in the NFL, just not with the Redskins. Perry Riley played too well for the coaches to bring McIntosh back.
