2012 "Diamonds in the Rough" Prospects
(Ok so my last thread wasn't going over so well with some so I made a new thread)
The draft is nearing, we have lots of needs as usual, and lots of great players are coming out as usual. We all know the Lucks, Blackmons, RG3s, Hightowers, etc. Give me some of the prospects who aren't talked about that often, Or are talked about, but come from small schools, that have caught your attention in the bowl games, or watching college football, or when the combine comes in a few weeks. Here are some of mine. Trumaine Johnson CB Montana (6'2 205 CB that was I-AA Buchanan finalist, considered by some to be the second best I-AA CB behind Janoris Jenkins.) Josh Norman CB Coastal Carolina (6'0 195) caught attention at the shrine game, then goes to the senior bowl and still shows he's legit. Dwight Bentley CB Louisiana Lafayette Ladrius Green TE Louisiana Lafayette Jared Green WR Souther- Son of Darrell Green, played with awful QB's, has the tools and measurables. Austin Davis QB Southern Miss- walk on QB who set school records previously held by some guy named Favre, looks like a matt flynn when he was at LSU. Nate Potter OT/OG Boise State- This has surprised me that he is not being talked about right now, and is being considered as a 5th rounder. Two years ago this guy was considered a first rounder and the next best thing to come out of Boise since Ryan Clady. Get him redskins! Matt Reynolds OT BYU- same thing as Potter. Tank Carder OLB TCU Jerrell Harris OLB alabama- always was near the ball, overlooked because of upshaw. Could be a MLB. Sammy Brown OLB Houston- 6'2 248 great size and speed, wasn't talked about that much because of Houstons offense. TY Hilton WR FIU- he's a dante hall type of returner, and a mario manningham type of WR. Brian Quick WR App St.- 6'5 220lb WR that got better as the senior bowl went on. Jordan White WR Western Michigan- very good WR that had an amazing bowl game. He was considered to be the best WR there since Greg Jennings. Joe Looney OG Wake James Brooks OG VT both are fast pulling guards, something shanny likes. Cliff Harris CB/RS Oregon- people forget about him, but yes he is in the draft and he did pick off Luck, Newton, Barkley, Foles, and Locker in one season... Levy Adcock OT OkSU- Great LT/RT for OSU, projected to be a later round pick. Andrew Datko OT FSU- the other T opposite Zebrie Sanders. Great player that got hurt in the year, but was projected as a late first before injury. Donald Stephenson OT/OG OU- can play both positions. Chandler Harnish QB NIU- he's been linked to us. Ryan Broyles WR OU- coming off a torn acl, if he wasn't injured, he'd be a late first/second rounder. Now he's going 4-5th round. Josh Chapman NT Bama- played 8 games with a torn ACL. Projected to go late after surgery now, was a key clog to that Defense. Brandon Taylor SS LSU Eddie Pleasant SS Oregon Damaris Johnson WR/RS Tulsa- just like Terrence Austin, but possibly more explosive. Danny Coale WR VT- a welker type of player.

Dude. You're turning this into a blog. Whatever. I like that you've done some research. This'll be a good reference after the draft too. Did anyone take note of Helu before last year's draft?

Re: 2012 "Diamonds in the Rough" Prospects
I took note of Helu after he made VT's defense look silly in that VT-Nebraska game from a couple years ago. He really flashed his home run potential in that game. I kept an eye out for him in the college football highlights for the rest of the season, and I was definitely excited to learn we traded up to draft him in the 4th round.

As a huge Hokie fan I'm very biased to Danny Coale but I've watched him since he stepped foot in Lane Stadium and he's a stud. Catches everything, sneaky speed and a class guy. Would love for the Skins to give him a look.

Re: 2012 "Diamonds in the Rough" Prospects
I watched him up close when ODU crushed the Spiders. I was at the 48, right behind the Richmond bench. Corp was able to hit a man at the top of his reach in the endzone, but he was out-shown and out-played that day by ODU freshman QB Tyler Heinke. Heinke can do that to you. And he still has 3 more years.
Corp, imho, is above average, with an above average arm. Not great. Did seem to look for his 2nd and 3rd WR. Seems on the thin side, and sports a thick knee brace. It's a shame he played for a sub .500 team. BTW, it was my first college fb game ever in person, and an awesome experience! ODU! ODU! ODU!

Todd McShay on Danny Coale:
McShay calls #VaTech WR Danny Coale his "blue-light special" sleeper: "I'm told he's gonna run 4.4s. ... Productive No. 2 or 3 WR (in NFL) Hookies getting a little love

Re: 2012 "Diamonds in the Rough" Prospects
I did get around to watching B.J. Coleman at the East-West Shrine game and I liked what he put on tape there. In the cases of both Coleman and Corp, neither was able to separate from their competition at the FCS level, so it kind of limits any hope you might have had of being a starter in the pros.
A guy I like more than either is Alex Tanney of Monmouth College, who I got to see play in person. I would have liked him a lot more if he came out last year after having nothing more to prove against D-III defenses, but I still think he is worthy of fourth round consideration who can either be dealt for a first or second round pick in a couple of years or maybe ascend to the level of a starter someday.
