'05 NFL Draft Trade Value Chart
2005 NFL Draft Trade Value Chart
Quite simply, each pick is assigned a certain amount of points, so using this chart you can determine what is a fair amount of compensation for each pick in the draft. This is what many GM's in the NFL use to gauge the value of the picks in the draft. Still don't get it? Check out this more detailed explanation. Thanks to BrudLee for suggesting we post this handy chart. |

Re: '05 NFL Draft Trade Value Chart
good chart, but i suppose it depends on a teams needs, depth of a draft, etc. such as this draft, not many great players like in past years, such as last years draft which was stocked.

Re: '05 NFL Draft Trade Value Chart
according to that we could techniquely trade our first pick for every pick in rounds 4,5,6, and 7. which would be pointless and weird

Re: '05 NFL Draft Trade Value Chart
I am sure he would not. I do think he would actually have to fire Gibbs if that plan was ever seriously considered. That is crazy. We'd never be in cap trouble though. We could low ball everyone and devalue the end of the draft enough so that everyone is making minimum with no SB. That'd be fun. Very popular with the players too I am sure.

Re: '05 NFL Draft Trade Value Chart
Isn't that the strategy that Beathard used to use-trade high picks for a bunch of lower ones?

This chart is a guideline of approximate value. For example, if the 49ers wanted out of the #1 pick, the approximate value of that pick exceeds the 4th pick in every round. Does that mean the Bears would trade their entire draft for one pick? Doubtful (although the Bears have made worse selections). These are what one team considers to be the value of "abstract selections". Actual picks (like when Ricky Williams was on the board for the Saints) can make the pick more valuable to a team. Ditka placed a great deal of value on the player to be selected, and he paid dearly for his choice. If his desire for that particular player wasn't so evident, he probably could have paid less (as a Skins fan, of course, I'm glad he didn't).

Previous Draft!
It seems we traded the pick (Ended up R. Williams) to the Saints for their entire draft that year. Then traded nearly all we had acquired for the rights to move back up again for Champ! Of course we got another #1 the next year in that tremendous trade! That was totally awesome! It should have worked out like the Herschel Walker deal, but we messed up by trading a 2fer during the following draft, in order to get either Arrington or Samuels, I forget, (think it was Arrington). Wait, Arrington turned out pretty well, didn't he? In fact, Samuels turned out pretty well also.

Re: '05 NFL Draft Trade Value Chart
In my opinion, some authoritative body (the NFL: owners with representation from the players' union) should attach a draftee's name to each slot in the draft value chart and publish the chart well before Draft Day... then, when the draft takes place, teams simply choose from the list (in their draft order), the players they want. The chart could be used as guidance for payments to the players. Thus, if a team was not interested in players in the first or second rounds, but wanted to sign several 3rd rounders, they could, and not have to pay them inflated salaries or signing bonuses because of the order in which they were picked.

Re: '05 NFL Draft Trade Value Chart
so it'd be open bidding on EVERYONE???
sorry, but that idea doesn't really seem like it'd work out at all in any way. |

Re: '05 NFL Draft Trade Value Chart
instead of a picking order, you're just going to have the league assign values? thats just another way of doing the same thing (determining salaries), and that sounds bound for all sorts of legal troubles (misrating players etc)... and what happens when 8 teams want the same guy? an open bidding war? that'd make everyone MORE expensive. It just doesn't seem well thought out in terms of real world implications.

Re: '05 NFL Draft Trade Value Chart
You still have a draft order - so in the case of 8 teams wanting the same guy, the first team to pick would get him, same as now, no bidding war. However, the salaries would be basically set before the draft, so there'd be no question of a guy being worth the 6th spot in the 2nd round, but not being worth the 4th spot in the 2nd round - all that is determined up front.
I think the biggest problem would be getting the players' union to agree to it - the current system pretty well assures that all of the marquee players are employed and well-paid, in my system it would be possible, although doubtful, for a first-round pick to go undrafted. Of course it's not well-thought out - it's a post on a message board, but I think it could be viable if the owners and players agreed to it and worked on the details. |
