Turner Reflects on Coaching Redskins
Turner Reflects on Coaching Redskins
By BARRY WILNER, AP Football Writer Tuesday, March 22, 2005 (03-22) 15:51 PST KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) -- Norv Turner thought the Washington Redskins were heading toward the Super Bowl after he coached them to the NFC East title in 1999. Instead, it turned out to be their last winning record and Turner was fired late in the 2000 season. "I thought we had a bright future," Turner, now the coach of the Oakland Raiders, said Tuesday at the NFL meetings. "We had a good young nucleus that we were building on. It's kind of how Philadelphia has been building their team. Instead they decided to go in a different direction, signing older players for big money." "They" in this case was Daniel Snyder, who bought the team in 1999, fired general manager Charley Casserly, then canned Turner. His direction was obvious: sign aging stars such as Bruce Smith and Deion Sanders to try and win quickly. Turner was asked if he was talking directly about Snyder, although the questioner added: "You don't have to bite." "I won't bite," the coach replied with a smile. //*********************** Interesting. |

Re: Turner Reflects on Coaching Redskins
Why is the media always trying to get Norv to talk trash about the Skins?
Good coordinator, mediocre head coach, but Norv has always been a classy guy. |

Re: Turner Reflects on Coaching Redskins
The reason: just to make something out of nothing.
Don't we already have enough former players and coaches talking crap about us?

Why is the media always trying to get ANYONE to talk trash about the Skins? Don't they do a good enough job with it already?

Re: Turner Reflects on Coaching Redskins
Norv was building towards a Super Bowl???????? His 8 year plan was about to come to fruition? Who is he kidding? You know, there are a lot of people in the NFL that have the resume to throw stones at Danny boy but Norv is certainly not one of them. Clean it up Norv...

If Norv would of had a field goal kicker that year we would of won a lot more games. After 6 season you would think by the 7th year as head coach you would have had a field goal kicker. |

Now now.... as much as we thought Norv to be an ineffective coach, you can't help but feel sorry for the guy for the way he was fired..Dan Snyder called him in on an off day, and made him wait three hours, and then had someone else inform Turner that he'd been canned. Not at all a classy move by Snyder.

Re: Turner Reflects on Coaching Redskins
true norv did have 8 years, and he is as soft as wet bread, but, don't forget, we were how close to going to the NFC champ. game that year? We lost to Tampa 14-13, remember the Super Bowl Rams could only score 11 against that Tampa D.
We had a good young team with a QB that threw for over 4000 yards, two WR's with over a 1000 yards and a RB with over 1400 yards...thats the best offensive team, yards wise the redskins have ever had! The next year Norv got fired with a winning record, and his last game he lost 9-7! Like him or not, the man got screwed. You ask me right now, who do I dislike more, Norv or the Danny? I have to say The Danny. |

Re: Turner Reflects on Coaching Redskins
Nothing. People just started bashing him for no reason. He IMPLIED something about Dan, but that's it.

Re: Turner Reflects on Coaching Redskins
Yeah, we really didn't have a kicker that year. I remember thinking that even if that last snap wasn't botched, we probably still wouldn't have made the kick. We had awful kickers that year.

Re: Turner Reflects on Coaching Redskins
All water under the bridge to me. If we needed to go through 8 years of Norv, 1 of Marty, 2 of Spurrier, and countless free agent mistakes in order to get Joe Gibbs back, then it was well worth it.

Re: Turner Reflects on Coaching Redskins
What did Norv say bad??? Nothing, he was just a miserable coach for 8 years. With 2 minutes left the half and we are down by 14 he decides to run out the clock by kneeling down on the ball. Talk about giving up.
