The RG3 Sucks - Knee Jerk Reaction Thread
Sorry, but all three threads have gone to RG3 discussions so I figured a thread devoted to him and his performance the next 6 weeks would be better.
Carry on! Let the other threads discussions stay on track.

He really does suck. The poor footwork on drop backs drives me crazy. Backpedals, lazy drops, that's basic stuff.
Drop backs should look crisp, get to the spot quickly and athletically. It would at least give me a LITTLE signal that you can take coaching.

He might suck...I'm not sure yet.
Having said that I would try to trade him early next year.

He certainly sucked against Tampa Bay but that doesn't mean that he is doomed to suck forever. If he must play the rest of this season, then he must also show steady improvement to keep his job next season.

I was his biggest supporter and defender, and I still like him and want him to be the franchise QB we mortgaged the house for, but I have absolutely no hope for that anymore... If we could trade him next year for anything, I say do it...

Chris Cooley: RGIII was so bad, I can’t assess the rest of the Redskins’ offense - The Washington Post
This is a pretty damn good breakdown of how terrible RG3 was on Sunday. The mis-reads are even more egregious in hindsight.

This shows to me that we do not have a student of the game on our hands. RG3 loves to talk about believing in yourself, and working hard, and the drive to get better, and he loves his inspirational quotes. And by all accounts he is working hard. Everyone at Redskins Park says so. But you don't see the ability to process what he's seeing on the field and read it. He's just not doing it. The Shanahans scaled down their offense to make it work for Robert, simplifying the reads so he could adapt as a rookie. He's had injuries which hurts the mental aspect, but as Cooley aptly points out, he's missing BASIC stuff. Like day one of training camp basics. Given that he's working hard, and given that he's still missing simple reads, I'm left to question whether he is mentally sharp enough to process the reads on the field quickly enough. It's either that or he's really afraid of getting hit, so much so that he's too frazzled to make the right decisions. Either way, he needs to get better quickly or I would never resign him past his rookie contract.

The article was brutal but fair. This had to be Robert's worst game as a Skin, by far. Really casts doubt as to whether he can ever perform at the NFL level.

It's definitely concerning how he's missing wide open looks and not pulling the trigger on easy reads. I really don't get it. Get the ball out, move the ball down the field. |

Re: The RG3 Sucks - Knee Jerk Reaction Thread
How can watching him play poorly the last 2 seasons be a "knee jerk" reaction? He hasn't won a game in over a year...

What is so damning about his evaluation of RGIII's play is the inability to follow the gameplan on simple concepts and simple reads. With the coaches later in the game reverting to base offense from camp and wondering what if anything he can execute. I'm assuming, without knowing Cooley knows what he is talking about. If Cooley knows this, Gruden and our coaches know this, and opposing defenses know this. I am also greatly encouraged by the offensive game planning and play calling. A handful of game changing opportunities were missed and many more smaller plays to move the ball up and down the field were blown. In the same show as Cooley's film breakdown of RGIII, Chris Baker commented that the players were ok with Gruden's honesty because it applied to everyone across the board. Admittedly, I don't think Baker could criticize Gruden on a radio show. But Gruden's approach is in sharp contrast to reports from a year ago that RGIII didn't want his bad plays shown in film sessions. I find the notion that Gruden's honest pressers are laying the foundation for making ALL player decisions on performance rather than Subway commercials very interesting. Gruden, unlike Shanahan cannot and should not let his success and the success of the team be so intertwined with RGIII's ability to improve. By being critical of everyone, coaches included, he is able to try his case in the court of public opinion and maintain a sense of fairness. I believe with logic and reason on his side, he will win. Or, at least lose and maintain his reputation. Something Shanahan was unable to do. Winning and losing all being shades of gray. I hope Jay is able to run things his way and succeed or fail on his own merit, which I believe is substantial. |

Re: The RG3 Sucks - Knee Jerk Reaction Thread
The Cooley thing from top to bottom is devastating. Well, RGIII has a few games left to show something else. But his way of playing since he was a kid is not the pocket-passer pro way. He could just turn and run away from folks even at the college level. Can't do that here. Depressing.
