Wade Phillips to Interview with the Redskins

Wade Phillips to interview for Redskins DC job - NFL.com

The Washington Redskins have lined up one interview for their newly opened defensive coordinator position.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Saturday that the team will interview Wade Phillips this week, according to a source.

The hire would be an intriguing one for Jay Gruden's team that already has 3-4 personnel in place.

Phillips was last defensive coordinator in Houston in 2013 and took over as interim head coach when Gary Kubiak was fired during the season.

Good. Hopefully if hired Wade Phillips can bring in his own assistants to start off fresh...all of those coaches who worked under Mike Shanahan should be replaced including Raheem Morris.

I would say it's a done deal, would be very surprised if they hired a different DC. Allen is afraid of thinking out of the box and is predictable.

This comment is pretty ignorant. AJ Smith is the one with familiarity with Phillips, not Allen. And please explain why Wade would be a bad hire? When you have the track record he does as a defensive coordinator it becomes easy to see why he keeps getting hired. Not everything has to be overly complicated or "outside the box" to be the right decision. Some things really are obvious, and that's because his resume is that clearly head and shoulders above the others.

Fangio would be good too I suppose, but with him you have to remember how much talent he was working with in SF.

Wade took bad defenses and immediately made them good in his first year. He did that recently in both Dallas and Houston.

Re: Wade Phillips to Interview with the Redskins

An interview with WP from this past June.

Wade Phillips: "A Big Redskins Fan Now"

From his biography on the same website:

Quote:
"The old stereotype is that you've got to get in a guy's face to get the most out of him," Wade says. "I've always believed that good guys, or nice guys, can finish first."

"He's the most likable coach in the NFL," said Charlie Waters, who remained on the Broncos' staff when Wade succeeded Dan Reeves in 1993. "People love to work and play for Wade. He has high expectations, but he cuts through the mess. There's a lot of common sense working there with Wade."

By Wade's definition, football teams are much like families. The Phillips coaching family is his blueprint. "You like for them to care about each other like you do in a family," he says, "and take up for each other. What family means is trust, loyalty and common purpose."

Wade is a patient communicator. "When I was growing up, people thought bitching was coaching," says Wade. "But players eventually turn off the guys who yell and scream. My father once told me, 'Don't coach the way you were coached. Coach the way you are.' I don't believe in coaching by fear. I believe in coaching by teaching."
Back in the day, I played for screaming coaches and teaching coaches. Regardless of the sport, I always played my best for teaching coaches.

Re: Wade Phillips to Interview with the Redskins

There's 2 other threads already discussing the DC position as well as Wade Phillips specifically. Was a 3rd thread really necessary?

Anyway we can contain all the DC talk to the new DC for 2015 thread???

I like WP, I think he's a great coach, what I don't is that he is too nice and with the culture/locker room that we have, it won't work. we need a disciplinarian. I saw JoeRedskin article and that's fine, i just think that we need to change the locker room mentality not with a nice grandpa.

I don't think the style matters nearly as much as track record and the introduction of new concepts that will fit our personnel better. Haslett didn't have great talent to work with, but he also had only one real trick up his sleeve: blitz blitz blitz.

Wade has come into new teams in recent years and made significant improvements in his first year, a sign that he knows how to assess the capabilities on the roster and deploy them in a way that maximizes their talent. We need his strong thinking and teaching to improve this team.

Re: Wade Phillips to Interview with the Redskins

Phillips makes complete sense on many levels. He's a guy that players buy into quickly, he's a proven defensive mind with extensive HC experience that can no doubt help Gruden. No brainer of a move.

Re: Wade Phillips to Interview with the Redskins

Any coach old or young is better than the shit show we had last year. We haven't picked a new coach or signed any new players and our defense is already better than last years.

Phillips is a retread. Not saying it would be a bad hire, but it would be nice to see them bring in a young up and comer.

3 of the 4 head coaches in the conference championships last year where retreads. I think the young up and comer can be overrated if you don't have the talent or the FO and coaching staff to assist them.

Re: Wade Phillips to Interview with the Redskins

We have a (supposedly) young, up-and-coming HC. No problem then with having an experienced coordinator.
