Wft quarterback of the future
So it is obvious that we have a staff in place. Turner makes me nervous sometimes but ...RR and JDR are here to stay. Our Defense is obviously young and awesome and after we address mlb and secondary look out we will be the best in the league. We got some good weapons on offense. Add some o line help. We are trending up quickly. But as has been the case for many moons, we need our quarterback. Unlike past years we do not have to worry about building around him. We are there. There is no doubt that if we had a top flight qb right now we would have our sights set on some pretty lofty goals. So what is the plan? Is AS involved? DH? Do we keep AS next year and let him groom someone? I cant imagine him having a problem with that. Do we keep DH and hope he figures things out and can be a long term backup? Do we pluck someone out of free agency? Stafford? Dak if the Cowboys continue to botch his contract situation? Fitzmagic? What thinks you all?
Just for the record im not moving on from this year we are winning with no quarterback but it is pretty obvious that going forward we need to help out the D with some semblance of quarterback play. |

Re: Wft quarterback of the future
We do have a few holes to fix, but I believe our long term qb of the future isn't on the roster yet. Alex Smith (provided yesterday was just a one-off and not a lingering issue) can play into next year if he wants but we need to get someone on the roster to develop this offseason.
Haskins has the physical tools, but everywhere else needs serious work. Wouldn't be surprised if Ron decides to move on this offseason.

Re: Wft quarterback of the future
While I would like Stafford, his contract is kinda fucked up. 35M cap hit next year, Lions would take on 25M in dead money if they cut him. Lions are in cap hell next year, like half the league.
I dont think we will have a clear idea of true QB candidates until the start of the 2021 league year. I anticipate some star players being cut that wouldnt otherwise if the cap was normal. -------------------------------- Top available NFL free agent quarterbacks in 2021 1) Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys 2) Philip Rivers, Indianapolis Colts 3) Mitchell Trubisky, Chicago Bears 4) Jameis Winston, New Orleans Saints 5) Cam Newton, New England Patriots 6) Ryan Fitzpatrick, Miami Dolphins 7) Jacoby Brissett, Indianapolis Colts 8) Tyrod Taylor, Los Angeles Chargers 9) Andy Dalton, Dallas Cowboys https://www.profootballnetwork.com/t...each-position/ ^^ these are the top QBs scheduled to FAs. I imagine there will be cut QBs, hopefully those will offer up a decent option bc these 9 suck. |

Re: Wft quarterback of the future
If Smith is healthy (not the Smith we saw last night), I'm ok with rolling with him for one more year. I do think if that is your plan though, you have to have a better insurance policy than Haskins. I am hopeful that they have their eyes on a couple college QBs they like, and are able to draft "their guy" in the early rounds - even if they have to move up (like the Sweat move) to get him. I am not a fan of going after a Stafford/Fitz type vet, unless Smith is not healthy enough to go. I would take Dak in a heartbeat if Dallas can't/doesn't get anything done there, but I suspect he gets another tag if not a contract. The two best scenarios to me are: 1. Alex is healthy enough to go next year and they are able to draft a QB in the middle rounds to sit a year behind him. 2. A QB they really like falls into their lap early, and he is the guy from day 1. Either way, I like bringing back Kyle Allen as the insurance policy.

Re: Wft quarterback of the future
SO hard to say right now..
Stafford isn't the long term answer but he could be very good for a few years. Haskins is not a QB1 , His mechanics are so bad and he's just not accurate. Alex is old but serviceable if he can stay healthy. I'd say draft a QB in RD1

Re: Wft quarterback of the future
I wouldn’t touch that free agent list.
It’s a high round draft pick who may have to mentor under Smith but talented enough to play soon ( not a project) or a bolder move for someone like Matt Ryan or Matt Stafford who franchises could go on rebuild. Another option would be a Sam Darnold or Wetz player who need a change of scenery. I rather not take this route but like it over the free agent list above

You think there will be one around where we pick? Would probably not be an immediate starter so we would need a Stafford or Smith until he is ready. |

Re: Wft quarterback of the future
The good thing is even at 19 we can draft a QB, and this is a deep class

Re: Wft quarterback of the future
Call Andrew Luck!! As other teams have proven, you can get a QB late in the 1st round or lower rounds. Jackson, Wilson, Brady come to mind.

Re: Wft quarterback of the future
I'm more concerned about the QB for the present.
With Smith we can get into the playoffs and maybe make some noise. Without Smith I'm worried about just getting to the playoffs. |

Re: Wft quarterback of the future
When Luck retired I thought maybe he'll sit out a season or two and come back. Now I think he's long gone and not coming back.

Re: Wft quarterback of the future
I don't think we can go into next season assuming Alex can play a full 16 games.
Kyle Allen isn't good enough. Haskins made absolutely zero progress this season. Still absolutely dogshit footwork. It's not even footwork because he doesn't even use them at all. I just don't understand it. But he is done here. Unplayable. Gonna have to draft a young QB in the 1st couple rounds. I don't think we have an option.
