Signing our rookies & salary cap

Who are we going to cut or what player is going to volunteer to renegotiate his contract? This has to be done in order for Redskins to create enough salary cap space to sign all of our draft picks.
Cut Barrow? I'm not sure that would be enough.
Brunnell renegotiate?
Does not look good.

Re: Signing our rookies & salary cap

Gardner's still on the roster, and I wouldn't expect that to continue much longer. I'd say Barrow is likely gone as well. Brunell has already renegotiated. We will also drop a few players on the fence (I wouldn't be surprised to see Raymer go). The rookie's will get in, don't worry.

Re: Signing our rookies & salary cap

Gardner is the easiest pick to be gone and I agree that Raymer will also be gone. I'm not sure about Barrow though...depends on what he can get accomplished in the next few weeks or so - would still be nice to maintain a decent amount of depth at LB.

Worry...huh thats funny.
Nothing about the Skins worries me.
I just disagree with the Snyder cap managament, which some on this web sight think he has handled so well. We are so tight up against the cap that even if a great player (at postion we really need like DE, MLB, SS or a blocking TE) becomes available, we have no way to sign him. Even if that player wanted to come here, sorry there is not enough money.
All we can afford is the dregs of free agency, not any real talent to round out our roster or even creat some reliable depth.
God forid we have an injury at critical position, we have no way to sign any real talent.

For nearly every team in the league, if a "great" player becomes available, they would be hard to sign. Look at the top free agents out there now. Ty Law is likely to be playing for very near the league minimum. Players who get cut now usually get cut for a reason (be it physical or financial) that makes it difficult to bring them in under any circumstances.

First off, you don't see the Patriots going out and signing lots of big-name players to big contracts. That's not the way you win in this league. You win through finding cheap talent (either through the draft or through the mid-range/low-range free agents) that you can COACH AND TEACH to play football the way you want to play it.

Secondly, continuity is so important. I don't want to see us signing a bunch of new starters every year, because it takes too long for them to learn to play a new system. If our roster is turning over, I'd like to see the new players (whether drafted or as free agents) generall come in as backups, so they can be TAUGHT by the coaches and grow into starting roles.

I don't want to sign a new stud DE. I want to give Chris Clemons a shot, remember how well he did on pass-rushing downs?? I don't want to sign an established blocking TE, I want to give our newly drafted fullbacks a chance to be our short-yardage bulldozers. That's how you unearth gems, you see flashes of their skills in limited duty one year, then the next year you promote them to a more prominent role.

I contend that we don't need a DE, we have Daniels and Arrington coming back, plus Clemons should see more time. We don't need more WRs because I think Taylor Jacobs can be something big (he's had the standard 3 years in the league now). I think we're fine at MLB; Lemar Marshall showed that he can play well last year, plus we built depth with McCune and Holdman. And we DEFINITELY don't need safeties.

I don't want more stars. I'm sick of that school of thought. I just want more cogs in the wheel.

Well said, Schneed. Also, Brunell should be paying to play for us. That deal still burns my ass.

Schneed10,
I think you did not read my post very carefully before, you made some big assumptions on what I was saying. If you look back at my second post on this thread, I said, " All we can afford is the dregs of free agency, not any real talent to ROUND OUT THE ROSTER or EVEN CREATE SOME DEPTH.

I never said anything about overhauling our roster every year or 'signning a bunch of free agents". I am also against signing alot of high priced Free agents just as you are.
BUt even the Patriots last year signed high priced Corey Dillon, to round out their roster.
What I am talking about is one or two guys a year that are bargains, not a bunch.

Also, something Snyder has not yet figured out, from June 1 until beggining of the season some good, but overpriced players get cut. Some of them will become desperate to get signed and some real bargains can be had. But since we have no money to sign our draft picks, much less sign a one of these bargains.

Re: Signing our rookies & salary cap

How do you propose that the Redskins resolve this problem? Who should we have not signed this off season in anticipation of signing some of these bargains?

Personally, I don't think we'll have any trouble getting our rooks in under the cap.

We did not get in this salary cap mess from just signing guys this year. It goes back several years. but the whole $7m Coles trade and the signing of Moss to a big contract is a start. Those two players alone cost us about $8m in cap space this year. One is not even going to play for us. Not a very smart move.

Getting our rooks signed will be additon by subtraction, because we wil have to cut 2-3 players.

My bad, I didn't mean to say you were saying those things and put those words in your mouth. I just meant to put down the notion that free agency is the key to winning.

This is where I beg to differ with you; these days fewer and fewer quality players are getting cut post June 1. This year for instance, I can't think of anyone really notable who I'd like to see added to our roster regardless of our cap situation.

Mainly, my point is that I feel our roster is fine the way it is. I don't feel the need to round out with further depth, I like our roster as it's constructed quite honestly. And this year the post-June 1 free agents are absolutely nothing to write home about, since teams are so much better at managing the cap now. I definitely don't want the scraps that other teams are dumping into the post-June 1 scrap heap this year. I want to see us make use of the considerable depth we have on hand right now.

PS - Dillon was not a Post-June 1 addition, nor was he a free agent. The Bengals traded him to the Patriots in April last year, right before the draft. The Patriots targeted a RB as a major offseason priority, and if they didn't land Dillon they certainly would have drafted one. He can't be considered a guy who just rounded out the team's depth, he was a major acquisition.

Now this is getting silly. We already generated some cap room by cutting Chad Morton, we don't need THAT much more room. We will only have to cut Gardner and Barrow to make room for all of our rookies. There's no subtraction there. We all knew Gardner was leaving anyway, and Barrow never even played for us.

If we keep Barrow, we could easily generate the space we need by cutting Cory Raymer, Lennie Friedman, or some other insignificant piece of the puzzle. Don't worry, we don't have to cut anyone important to get our rookies in.

Re: Signing our rookies & salary cap

Once RG is gone that will clear up $2M in cap space, a few more minor cuts here and there are all I see the rest of this offseason.

I don't see getting the rooks signed as a major concern at all.

it sucks that no team is willing to give a draft pick for gardner, because they know he's gonna get released soon. gardner, barrow might be a possible cut if he isn't ready to go, and a few minor ones.

In Gibb's press conference when he mentioned rehabs he mentioned Barrows so it sounds like the team hasn't quite given up on him. Could that mean we will keep him, but possibly re-work his contract?.................
