2026 Commanders -- In and Out
Well, we can start with Marshon Lattimore being at the top of the "out" list. Not only was he terrible and ended up with a blown ACL and someone we can cut and save $18M with no cap hit, but to top it off, he just got arrested on weapons charges in Ohio. https://www.wusa9.com/article/sports...d-6395df4aa207
I am not sure if I have ever seen an easier cut candidate in my life.

Re: 2026 Commanders -- In and Out
I won't judge AP too harshly on that pick -- I think most of us were pleased when Lattimore signed, even though he was dinged up at the time. The falloff in his ability was pretty dramatic and caught most people off guard, I'd say.
I think one could judge the lack of edge talent going into the season more harshly. We had Armstrong who showed real promise and was off to a heck of a start, but not a lot of depth past him (although I like the Wise signing and thought he was also playing very well before injury). I also thought the safety situation was an obvious weakness -- I did think Martin would be a lot better than he is, but Chinn was a stud for us last year (and has played well this year), and I didn't think Will Harris was an adequate replacement. I figured with Amos, Lattimore, and Sanristil, that trio might mask some of the coverage issues at safety, but that was clearly wrong -- the back end of our D was terrible. Of course, it did not help that we had such a drop off in our LB play at the same time -- it was kind of the perfect storm.

Re: 2026 Commanders -- In and Out
Exactly, hindsight is 20:20, I doubt anyone could predict the injury chaos and fall off of guys like Luvu and Sainristil. I do question the logic of letting Chinn go, and I think that was more money than skill, so a short-sighted decision.
Other than that yes he's had some draft picks underperform against expectations, but it's too early to describe them as busts. And too often very serviceable players are judged solely against their draft slot and not against their overall production. i.e. Newton was projected as 1st rd, dropped to 2nd, has produced more like a 2nd or 3rd rd talent, but seems to be judged as if he was taken in the 1st. It's 'either boom or bust' mentality, instead of grading out the results. I'm not convinced AP is a genius, but he's definitely not an idiot. 2024 draft - 8 of 9 picks still with the team. 2025 draft - 5 of 5 still with us. It's not brilliant in that a number of those picks haven't met expectations, but it's far from a disaster. FA is where he's been more hit and miss, but again, he found guys that contributed well then for some reason fell off (Luvu) or have contributed then gotten injured just when we needed them (i.e. Wise). The only absolutely clear whiff is Lattimore, and he's admitted it was a failed move. I want to wait until after this offseason to grade him. So far I'm giving him 7/10, and I'd like to see him move that needle to at least an 8. If he drops to a 6 then I'm worried. Last edited by AnonEmouse; 01-09-2026 at 06:52 AM. Reason: Typo |

Re: 2026 Commanders -- In and Out
I figure that the team will probably part ways/not re-sign with Ertz, Ekeler, Von Miller, Preston Smith, Allegretti, Wylie, Igbinoghene, Josh Johnson, Quan Martin, Chris Moore, and McNichols. And there's a whole bunch of guys where I have no idea what they will do but they're largely ST or backups -- e.g., Percy Butler, George Fant, Trent Scott, Colson Yankoff. There's a lot of work to do with this roster. No idea how many practice squad guys have a chance of making a move up. (I noticed, with amusement, that they have Andrew Carter on the PS -- not the young, Andre Carter who is actually on the PS, but the original Andre Carter who played for us and the 49ers, last played in 2013, and is 46 years old. https://www.commanders.com/team/play.../andre-carter/).

Re: 2026 Commanders -- In and Out
Sounds like Payne is in for 2026.
I'm for it. While his salary isn't equal to production a. we can take on the salary no problem b. Who out their FA land would we realistically be able to replace him with? c. I'd rather our FO designate the time to pursue so big ticket signings time is limited and we don't need to make an additional hole and then compete timewise to fill it.

Re: 2026 Commanders -- In and Out
He definitely did last time. Even if he doesn’t I’d rather role with him and have Peter’s focus time and effort on more pressing needs. Once FA starts rolling he is going to be busy. Basically a dude buying 30 things on eBay at once trying to out negotiate 15 other bidders

Re: 2026 Commanders -- In and Out
Tress Way back in! $3 mil fully guaranteed and AP used the 4-year qualifying contract which means it only counts as $1.5 mil against the cap. Well done on AP saving that cap hit because we were going to sign Tress regardless and $1.5 might be enough to get a key depth piece.
