Another Front office Blunder
I read Courtney Brown is injured, AGAIN. Out 6-8 weeks. He won't last the season, as usual. http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansas...s/12304251.htm
Weren't there some people saying we should have pursued him more? |

DENVER - Broncos defensive lineman Courtney Brown dislocated his left elbow Thursday, a setback that is expected to keep him out three to six weeks and adds yet another to a long list of injuries that have hampered his career. Brown was injured toward the end of a play during a practice that was moved indoors because of rain. Coach Mike Shanahan said X-rays showed no breaks. "He's done everything in the offseason to get himself ready, and his previous injuries are feeling great, so to have something like this happen to him I'm sure is disheartening," Shanahan said. Brown, the first pick of the 2000 draft, has played only one full season since he entered the league. Last year, he missed 14 games with an injured foot. Other injuries have been to his elbow, biceps, neck, knee and ankle. The Broncos signed him in the offseason, knowing he can still be a force if healthy. "That guy is going to get a break, and he is going to be back," Broncos defensive coordinator Larry Coyer said. "I know it. That sucker is tough, and he'll be back. I promise you." |

Re: Another Front office Blunder
I know that you can say that, but who knows if he would have gotten hurt in Washington?

I was one of the people saying we should have gotten more involved in his pursuit. And while it does look like I was wrong, he could still be ready for the start of the season... Still... I'm glad the FO didn't listen to me...

I still can't believe we didn't sign this guy. Who woulda thunk it, he's hurt... again.

Re: Another Front office Blunder
I feel sorry for Courtney Brown here. Coming out of Penn State, he looked to be a potential star in the NFL. He played really well in Cleveland in his rookie year for about 8-10 games until he got hurt. And then he got hurt again -- and again --- and again.
There is scant evidence that Brown is a malingerer or a dressing room problem-child, so I can't say that he deserves this cruel twist of fate. As I said, I feel sorry for him ... But I'm not horribly surprised that he's hurt yet again.

Re: Another Front office Blunder
weren't his other injuries to his legs (I don't know a lot about his time in Cleveland)? if this was from a badly angled fall or something, it doesn't matter who u r and what past injuries u've had when it comes to landing with a lot of your weight on one part of your body. anything can happen at anytime especially in such a physical occupation and I still would have liked to have seen him sign a perfomance based contract here, but I'm confident Williams can get a mixture of guys to keep up the pressure.

Re: Another Front office Blunder
I think it's so easy to take a look at the guys we signed who were total busts and declare the front office a bunch of meatheads. Like if we looked at Brunell and Barrow. It's only natural to look at those players and deem them failures, because the players are on our roster for so long reminding us of what a mistake they were.
But what goes unnoticed a lot of the time are the players we pass on. After they move on to their new team, we tend to forget about them because they're not on our roster like Mark Brunell is. But this is a key part of front office maneuvering. I think the front office has done a fine job lately. We wanted to keep Champ, but not at the price he wanted. He woulda been worth $5 million a year, but his play last season with the Broncos was definitely not worth $8 million. Courtney Brown, we offered a lower price tag. Gibbs knew the risk of injury was there and made an appropriate offer. It's not luck that we didn't get stuck with Courtney's injury, it's smart pricing. If he signed with us for what we offered, he wouldn't have hurt our cap at all if he got hurt and sat out the year. With what the Broncos are paying him though, he is hurting their cap. Who knows, setting rational prices on Antonio Pierce and Fred Smoot may prove wise as well. I know this much, I love seeing a level of sanity and level-headedness in our approach to free agency. |
