Official "Who Gets #26?" Thread
Now with Sean Taylor on board, seems this question will take on a whole new life. May as well set up a single thread in which to beat it to death!
For the record, I think it is Iffy's as long as he's on the roster. Or maybe a three way, last-man-standing grudge match! Iffy drops an elbow from the top of the cage! Oh! The humanity!

Iffy might not even be here. He will make a great backup, but as a backup he should get a new contract and a new number.

I voted for Portis because he's gonna be the main man this season. Tradition wise it is Iffy's but I don't think he'll be a starter now. If he does stay on the team I think he'd give it up for Portis. Taylor is a rookie, he'll have to wait his turn to get his choice!!

Portis and Taylor played together, and Portis wore number 12. I guess hes not allowed to wear number 12 in the NFL. Portis was there first, so 26 wasnt his choice.
Can Portis wear 12? or does a QB have to wear that.

Iffy is not under contract, so technically, I think that #26 is available.

He doesnt have a contract for next year but still might be under contract for the time being. We have the rights for him at minimum... I guess we'll see when jerseys go on sale. Id be pissed if I buy one and they change numbers.

Here's what the NFL has mandated as the official system for jersey number/position. Listed is the primary range and then a secondary range for some positions. The league changed the rule this year that allows a player to pick a number from either range, where it used to be that a secondary number could only be picked if a number in the primary range wasn't available.
QB, P, K: 1-19 RB, DB: 20-49 LB: 50-59 (90-99) C: 50-59 (60-79) G, T: 60-79 WR: 80-89 (10-19) TE: 80-89 DL: 60-79 (90-99)

I don't know all the rules but I know they apply to defense, or at least they did at one time. When Brian Bosworth came into the league he wanted to where his college number, 40, but wasn't allowed to, because it's not a number permitted for linebackers, so he wrote "40" on his shoes. (Don't ask me why I remember this bit of trivia, I just do) |
